When John Kerry made his Vietnam Service the centerpiece of his 
speech during the Democrat convention he probably though of a 
simple comparison:  "Brave John Kerry fighting the enemy in 
Vietnam while a cowardly George W. Bush hides in the U.S. in the 
Texas National Guard."  The comparison would certainly make Kerry 
look like a better potential Commander-in-Chief than George W. 
Bush would.

Kerry made two major mistakes in this approach:

(1)  George W. Bush has *experience* as Commander-in-Chief of our 
armed forces for almost four years now, and has done a fine job.  
John Kerry, OTOH, commanded perhaps a dozen men in a war which 
has been *over* for three decades.  GWB easily comes out ahead in 
that comparison.

(2)  It didn't occur to Kerry, apparently, that there were 
probably many hundreds of other combat veterans who had either 
observed his actions directly or who had served under similar 
circumstances at that time.  They could examine his claims 
critically.  Up to now it seems Kerry hasn't refuted any of the 
charges being made against him -- he merely rejects them while 
giving no proof.
