People accept what they've been conditioned to accept. That's part of the
dirty little secret the liberals don't want anybody to glom onto. You start
out by preying on people's fears, getting them to start looking over their
shoulders for shadows. Then, when you've got them all jumpy and worried, you
start telling them you're going to fix everything. You coax them into passing
a few local laws, and get people elected, and before you know it, you've got
control of the government, and everybody is dependent on you for everything
they think is important, from cradle to grave. Once you get to that point, you
can sell 'em anything, tax the shit out of them to pay for it, and make 'em
think its all necessary. And they'll even thank you for it.

We've only been out of a 50 year cycle of that crap since 94. It takes a long
time to undo the damage done by a welfare state mentality, and sometimes the
pendulum swings too far back the other way in compensation. The trick is to
stop it swinging altogether, and that's a tough job.

Ideally, we want to try to balance the natural need of people to want to be
protected and cared for like when we were kids, with standing on our own hind
legs and telling everybody, including the government, we'd rather do it
ourselves. On balance, the Constitution does a pretty good job of balancing
things in my opinion. That's what we need to try to get back to when it comes
to making laws. There would be a hell of a lot of things run differently that
we take for granted, or rather accept, if the first rule of any law - does it
follow the Constitution - was strictly enforced. I think we'd all be a lot
better off for it, too.
