Ärende: atomic bomb question
============================
Hello John,

>AH>With the 60th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs in the
>AH>news, I have a question. Were there military bases, or small islands
>AH>around the main islands, that could have been targetted instead of the
>AH>two cities? If so, would the explosions of the bombs on such places
>AH>have convinced the Japanese to surrender? *adh*

JH>Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were legitimate military targets, not
JH>just civilian population centers.

Pearl Harbor was a military target. And a legitimate one, at that.
The Japanese clearly avoided civilian areas, going straight for the
military ships in the harbor.

Hiroshima was never a military target at any time during WWII (except
on August 6, 1945 - if innocent civilians can be considered as being
legitimate targets). Nagasaki was bombed only because Kokura was
obscured by clouds.

The Japanese high command had offered to surrender a full month
*before* the genocidal maniac Harry S Truman ordered atomic bombs
dropped on populated Japanese cities. IOW, Harry S Truman refused
to accept any Japanese surrender until after hundreds of thousands
of innocent Japanese men, women and children had been vaporized.

JH>I don't remember anymore what they made, but I am certain of that.

Harry S Truman was a mass murderer. Much more so than Osama bin Laden.
BTW, the residents of Hiroshima made babies. The residents of Nagasaki
made babies. That is, before they were vaporized.

JH>In any case, blowing up some island wouldn't necessarily have done it.

Funny that. The Japanese high command had offered to surrender a
full month before Harry S Truman ordered the atomic bombs dropped on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even though Truman had the capacity to order
such bombs dropped on uninhabited islands, he chose to vaporize hundreds
of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians. Not that he had to order
the dropping of any atomic bombs at all. After all, the Japanese high
command had offered to surrender a full month before Harry S Truman
ordered to drop atomic bombs on Japanese populated cities. I guess
good 'ol Harry wanted to see Japanese flesh melt off those icky gooks
before accepting any Japanese surrender.

JH>The civilian casualties is what ultimately prompted the Emperor to
JH>take the unprecedented step of speaking directly to the common
JH>people, the man in the street, telling them to surrender. Even that
JH>was a near thing, as the military junta that was running things
JH>wanted to fight to the death.

The "military junta" that you are talking about offered to surrender a
full month before the genocidal maniac Harry S Truman ordered the atomic
bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Why didn't Harry S Truman accept the
Japanese offer to surrender? Because good 'ol Harry wanted to see how
them atomic bombs worked on real people.

JH>His "going public" with orders to surrender not only saved millions of Japan
JH>lives, but prevented what were estimated to be at least a million US casualt
JH>if the invasion had gone forward as planned.

There would have been no "invasion" since the Japanese high command
had already offered to surrender - a full month before Harry S Truman
ordered the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Hirohito only went "public" because he was ordered to do so by the U.S.

Japan was already defeated, with Tokyo nothing more than rubble, along
with many other Japanese cities, the Japanese navy being nonexistent,
and the Japanese high command offering to surrender a full month before
the atomic bombs were dropped.

IOW, had Truman accepted the Japanese surrender before ordering the
atomic bombs to be dropped, Truman would not have been rewarded with
the sight of melting human flesh.
