You really need to study some history - especially in relation to modern
democratic governments.

The only thing that results from multi-party governments (Germany, Italy,
Israel, England, etc.) is a fragile coalition style of rule that sways with
whatever capricious wind happens to blow through. Even the ancient Greeks
recognized that true democracy resulted in mob rule. As democratic forms of
government go, the republic is the only one that really works. (Rome's
greatest achievements, for example, took place during the days of the Roman
Republic)

The founders of this country decided on a republic for good and valid reasons,
and a bicameral for of legislature. That setup lends itself to a two party
system, and that is the way we have functioned for over 200 years. Far as I
know, we are the only democratic country in history that has had, and continues
to have, peaceful transitions of power every four years, regardless of the
political party leaving power.

As for third parties, we've *always* had "third parties" in this country. The
GOP started out as a third party, but didn't come to prominence until one of
the major parties at the time died. The function of third parties in our
political layout are as idea machines. The Libertarian party has been around
longer than any other of the third parties, but they seldom get more than a few
local seats in any election. And that is the bottom line. When and if a
fringe party gains prominence as a major will depend on the people. If they
can't field a candidate who is able to galvanize the voters, they won't get
beyond where they are now. But we will remain a two party system no matter
which parties are the majors, because that is what works in the long run.
