A Coward and a Liar

A Bushite who should know better sent me a clip over the weekend, singing
Dubya’s praises because he told an NBC Today Show interviewer that “had my
unit been called up, I would have gone (to Vietnam).ö

 “This,ö she said, “shows me what kind of man our great President is.ö It
sure does sweetie. It shows the President of the United States is not only
a coward but a liar.

Apparently those anti-depressants Bush pops like jelly beans are fogging up
what little is left of his brain. According to his Air Guard application
(the one released by the Pentagon but not the White House), Bush checked
the “No Overseas Serviceö box when he used the services of the Texas
Speaker of the House to get bumped to the head of the line so he could sit
out the Vietnam War in the Guard.

Now I realize Dubya has problems with geography. He missed most of the
questions on foreign countries and capitals put to him by a reporter in the
2000 campaign but the last time we looked at a world map Vietnam was
overseas.

So if young Bush was so eager to serve his country in Vietnam, why didn’t
he join an active duty unit rather than hide out in the Guard? Because he
knew his chances of going in harm’s way was ‘nil back home in Texas unless
the Viet Cong crossed the Rio Grande and invaded which was another long
shot because even the VC knew the Lone Star state wasn’t worth invading.
And just to be on the safe side, he checked that little box that said, if
called, he'd rather stay home.

Former Texas House Speaker Ben Barnes, by the way, now says he’s “more
ashamed of myself than I’ve ever beenö because he helped Bush and sons of
other wealthy Texans avoid Vietnam by getting them preferred spots in the
Guard.

“I got a young man named George W. Bush into the National Guard ... and I'm
not necessarily proud of that, but I did it,ö Barnes, a Democrat, said.

"I became more ashamed of myself than I've ever been because it was the
worst thing I did - help a lot of wealthy supporters and a lot of people
who had family names of importance get in the National Guard," Barnes
added. "I'm very sorry of that and I'm very ashamed of it and I apologize
to the voters of Texas for that."

And he should be ashamed, just as Bush should be ashamed to ever discuss
his so-called military service around men and women who served their
country in combat.

In the last few days, Bush has tried to temper growing backlash against the
phony Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign against Democratic nominee
John F. Kerry’s Vietnam service, saying Kerry’s military record was “more
heroicö than his days in the guard.

“I think him going to Vietnam was more heroic than my flying fighter jets.
He was in harm's way and I wasn't,ö Bush said in an interesting play on
words since he didn’t even fly jets for his entire Guard service because he
failed to show up for a physical and lost his flight status.

Bush’s “talk nice about Kerry’s service recordö is the latest strategic
ploy by the President’s political advisor, Karl Rove.

The swift boat vet surrogates, led by a longtime GOP operative and financed
by two Bush friends, have done their job by attacking Kerry’s record with
lies, distortions and ever-changing stories. Now the President can appear
to be above all that by saying nice things about Kerry.

But by attempting to equate his laughable record in the Texas Air Guard
with real military service, Bush insults every American who fought for his
or her country.

The most pathetic irony comes when you realize that the man who used Guard
service to avoid fighting in a war later became the President who now sends
more Guard and Reserve units, per capita, to fight and die in a far-off
land than any administration in history.

Yes, my dear, George W. Bush’s statements on the Today Show over the
weekend shows us, without a doubt, what kind of man he is: A pathetic,
lying coward surrounded by pathetic hangers-on and cheered on by pathetic,
partisan morons.

Enjoy your convention this week honey. I’m going fishing.
