My dad was a logger many years ago and he used to have a story about
how he was waiting for a load of logs and decided to take that time to
have a quick snack. I jumped out of the cab of his truck and walked
over to a stump a couple yards away from his truck.

As he was sitting there, he was watching a couple guys falling trees
several yards away. One had made his undercut and was in the process of
making the final cut to fall the tree when it started to split. He let
go of his chainsaw and was about to turn away and run when the thing
caught him under the chin and knocked him back about 50 feet. He just
laid there and my dad thought the worse until the guy started moving.

It turned out that he had turned away just enough that the tree didn't
hit him square on. If he had been a bit closer he'd have lost his head.
Literally. My dad said that was as close as he wanted to get to seeing
someone getting killed by a widow-maker.
