Locally we have a small "mom & pop" hardware store. A few years ago
Lowes opened a store less than a mile away. People who rarely shopped
at the "mom & pop" lamented that Lowes would put the little guy out of
business. Interestingly enough, the "mom & pop" are still at it with no
sign of closing down.

Around here we have a mega store called Fred Meyers (now owned by
Kroger). My good friend's daughter is the Nursery Manager and her
husband is the Produce Manager there. The daughter used to live in
Spanish Fork, Utah and Wal Mart caused the Fred Meyers she worked at
there to close. She is now worried that Wal Mart will do the same here
with the new store that is going in less than a mile away.

I think that the mega stores do more harm to other mega stores than
they do to "mom & pop" stores.
