In the earlier thread on this subject, I referred at some length to the
action of the European Court of Human Rights in its ruling on whether
various interrogation techniques used by the British against the IRA
were in fact "torture."  If you have archives, you can go back and pick
up where you left the thread at that time.

See my mention, earlier today, about Cambodian torture.  As for Japanese
torture in WW II, it included bamboo shoots under the fingernails and
genital mutilation.  The gulags had torture chambers as well.  And North
Vietnam.

Your response to my question was another question.  The answer to YOUR
question is obvious: "we" don't emulate their torture.  I don't think it
is approved, routine procedure to electrocute people until they pass out
from the pain.  Same with cutting off a prisoner's testicles, putting
them in his mouth, sewing his mouth shut, and then sending him back to
his associates.  Same with tying a prisoner down on top of growing
bamboo shoots, and letting them push their way through the skin for
several days.  That is torture.

I've already granted you that some forms of waterboarding would be
torture, if the prisoner is actually partially drowned as opposed to
just anticipating that he might be.  Sleep deprivation is not torture.
Playing loud music is not torture.  Having a female guard dress in a
provocative manner, so as to offend the sensibilities of an Islamic
prisoner, is not torture.  Locally, a guy was convicted of felony
assault and three misdemeanor assaults because he kicked an Afghan
detainee in the groin, punched him, and struck him with a flashlight.  I
doubt that any guards at the Hanoi Hilton were ever convicted of a
felony crime for any similar beatings of Americans.  That was the reason
for my question.  Guess I was wasting my time.  You can return to your
rant.
