Our Battalion Commander in Vietnam was a Lt. Colonel, and a `very' tall, large
man.


His radio call-sign was `Brahma Bull'.


Now the Battalion finally came up with a person who could play a trumphet when
this guy transfered into our company, and brought his trumphet along when he
came to Vietnam in order to keep in practice. He could play pretty good, to.


We used to hold `Guard Mount' in the late afternoon in front of Battalion HQ,
and it was usually a rather informal affair; as long as your jungle suit was
clean, and your boots looked like they'd at least been `wiped' recently, your
gear was all there, and you had the required number of loaded ammo magazines
in your ammo pouches, that was it. Get in the trucks and out on to the
perimeter bunkers we went. The whole process took about ten or fifteen
minutes, depending on how soon the OD came out of the messhall at Battalion to
look us over.


But as soon as the Colonel knew this guy with the trumphet was in his unit, it
wasn't long before we were going through close-order inspection of the
in-coming guard detail (as if the fuckin' all-night stayin' awake...and then
only getting to sleep till about 11:AM the next morning before having to pull
vehicle maintainence detail in the motor pool the rest of the day wasn't bad
enough! This fuckin' Colonel decides `his' Battalion is gonna do `Retreat'
with the lowering of the colors.....taps, close-order inspection of the guard,
the whole enchelada! In the middle of a fuckin' war, we're havin' to `break
starch' on guard mount!).


Anyway.......one afternoon we were hangin' around the dispatch shack near the
entrance to the company area, and we're all drinking beer and gabbin', when
this trumphet player strolls up. The CO's jeep was sitting right nearby, and
his radio was on. While we were standing there we hear the Colonel talking on
the radio to one of the POL yard NCO's, and one of the guy's gets the idea to
key the CO's mike, and the trumphet player breaks out with `The Lonely Bull'
almost all the way through......right into the mike!


Well.........when the Colonel's jeep came roaring down the road toward the
entrance to our motor pool (and it wasn't five minutes!), you never saw a
group of troops scatter and dive underneath tractors and deuce-an-a-halfs so
fast in your entire career! I probably found more to keep me under that
tractor all afternoon than I'd found to do under there since I'd been assigned
to it!


When we went to the mess hall for supper.....the CO waited till we were all
sitting and eating, then he got up and told us he'd had a `visit' from Colonel
Tomkins that afternoon.......and it `wasn't' a social call, either! And the
Colonel passed `this' one off as a joke.....told the CO to pass on to `those
in on it' that the Colonel admitted it was kind of amusing......but he (our
CO) was `up' for Captain pretty soon, and it `better' not happen again!


Needless to say.......the Colonel's call sign changed; to `Polar Bear'.
