Maybe I need to be a bit more specific about what I said, and what my basic
philosophy is. I'll tell you right off that Ed doesn't have a clue as to what
makes me tick. He thinks he does, but he doesn't. Ross and John Massey are
much closer, but even they don't know all of it.

I've been an amateur historian all my life. Most people when they say that
mean that they are familiar with historical events as portrayed in the history
books they used in school. Most of that history is superficial at best. I
have instead, concentrated on the details one finds in contemporary journals,
autobiographies, and other sources. One thing I've come away from that with is
an understanding that force is the one thing that rules. Good, bad, or
indifferent, force is what determines the outcome in any historical conflict.

People today have lost an understanding of that. They no longer have that
essential toughness of spirit, that core of resolve, that let's them do what
needs to be done regardless of the cost. Can anyone imagine what would've
happened if Ike hadn't had the resolve to carry through with D-Day, even though
every indication was that it was the supreme gamble? How about the men at the
Alamo, who knew that whatever delay they could achieve against Santa Ana would
would give Sam Houston time to gather his forces, even though it would mean
their deaths?

At the societal level, our laws are supposed to provide certain things to the
people, and we have agreed to put ourselves under those laws to ensure that
society takes care of us. When people break the law, in most cases they have
made a conscious decision to set themselves outside of society. They have
given up their rights as citizens by setting themselves outside the laws that
society has set up.

Now, take the fact that force is the prime determinant in any confrontational
encounter, and that criminals, by definition, have chosen to break the law, and
we have a clear choice. We can allow them to get away with those crimes if our
desire for fairness overcomes our common sense, or we can apply the rules that
history teaches us which have proven to end conflicts.

Force in and of itself is neither good or evil, it just is. However, even when
wielded by a basically good country, force can appear to be evil. The
situation on our borders is just such. There are tens of thousands of illegals
crossing the borders every month. Those areas where it is the worst have seen
an increase in violent crimes such as murder, rape, burglary, etc. Drug
trafficking has increased, and so on. There is a literal invasion going on
and we sit back and equivocate and hem and haw instead of doing the hard thing
that would stop it in short order. This is not about quotas, or what's fair.
It is about a foreign nation encouraging its people to illegally cross our
border, right up to the point of providing maps and other information on how to
avoid capture, etc. If this country were an enemy, we would long since have
considered that invasion an act of war and acted accordingly. But they are
supposed to be our friend, so we sit back and do nothing.

Well, I couldn't care less if they're supposed to be our friends or not.
Friends don't do friends this way. So, to fix it, that leaves the one solution
that time and time again throughout history has proven to be effective - force.
The real question is whether we have the guts anymore to apply it as
necessary.
