It all started in California in the school system about 30 years ago.  Somebody
got the idea that kids can't function if their self esteem is low, so all of a
sudden it was verboten to do or say anything that might be injurious to the
self-esteem of said young crumb-crunchers.  After 30 odd years of this, the
idea has spilled over into everyday society.  Hence all the PC correctness
about sexual harassment, all the weird lawsuits, etc.  Now it has gotten to the
point that you can't use certain words or you might offend somebody, and we
certainly can't have that, now can we?

Along the way, somebody forget that you build self-esteem by teaching kids (and
it seems adults need this too) how to be winners, and self-sufficient, and that
there is no shame in failure as long as you do your best in the effort.  In
other words, well adjusted and mentally healthy people don't have problems with
self-esteem, and thus don't need to be protected by yet another manifestation
of the nanny society.
