Ärende: Election
================
Hello Frank,

>LL>Despite record job losses, folks in Ohio preferred to stick with
>LL>Bush.

>LL>What the Democrats need is not a bad economy, but rather a vision
>LL>for America. The entire Kerry campaign was run using tactics. No
>LL>strategy involved at all. Just tactics. And that dog don't hunt.

>JH>Vision my ass. They haven't had an original idea since 1932.

>LL>And what a great vision it was! Sixty years of Democratic control of
>LL>both houses of Congress, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court! Not only
>LL>that, but the Democratic vision for America gave us the presidencies
>LL>of FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ, Carter, and Clinton! And what a ride it was!
>LL>If only today's Democrats would embrace that vision, rather than
>LL>"apologize" for such success!

FS>I think the Democrats would gain a bit of respect were they to
FS>officially apologize for the misdeeds of FDR, JFK, LBJ
FS>(especially), Carter and Clinton (especially). Harry Truman was
FS>the sole bright star in their firmament!

Quite the opposite! Had Kerry not been such a flip-flopper, always
apologizing for his liberal votes, he would have won the election!
Especially if he had chosen Dennis Kucinich, the esteemed FDR-style
Democratic U.S. Representative from Ohio, as his running mate. Sure,
the Kerry/Kucinich team would have lost the popular vote, being down
by 25 million votes to the Bush/Cheney team, but Kerry/Kucinich would
have been winners in the electoral college, 272-266.

>LL>FDR won election in 1932 due to Republicans splitting their vote.

>LL>FDR won re-election in 1936 with a recovering economy.

>JH>We were still deep in the Depression in 36.

>LL>And coming out of it fast, thanks to the economic policies of FDR.

FS>In 1937 we dropped right back into the Depression! "thanks to
FS>the economic policies of FDR"? ... heh heh heh ...

In 1937 Americans were celebrating a return to prosperity, having
just re-elected FDR to a second term by a large margin.

>LL>FDR won re-election in 1940 with a good economy.

>JH>The economy was barely on its feet, and only because of increased
>JH>government spending on war materiel.

>LL>The economy was doing splendidly by 1940, with only remnants of the
>LL>Great Depression remaining. Had it not been for WWII, the economy
>LL>would have done even better.

FS>The economy was doing very poorly in 1940 then defense- (later
FS>war-) production brought us out of the Great Depression finally.

The economy was doing quite well in 1940, and would have done even
better in the years following had there been no WWII. That is why FDR
won his bid for a third consecutive term by such a wide margin.

>LL>FDR won re-election in 1944 with a war economy.

>JH>He won because he knew how to unify the people in the war effort,
>JH>and because you don't change horses in the middle of a battle.

>LL>FDR won election to the presidency *four* times, all by large margins.
>LL>Why did people love FDR so much? FDR created JOBS for people
>LL>everywhere. And putting people back to work is what brought this
>LL>country out of the Great Depression.

FS>Huh? The only jobs FDR created were WPA and PWA jobs ... [sigh]

FDR saved capitalism from itself by infusing our economy with a mild
dose of socialism. As a result, we have a mixed economy today rather
then the cesspool capitalism of yesteryear. All thanks to FDR. And
Truman. And Kennedy. And Johnson. And Carter. And Clinton. :)
