The U.S. gives 0.1% of its GNP to foreign aid.  That is 21st out of the
top 21 industrialized countries in the world.  However, because of the
large amount of remittances sent by Mexicans living in the U.S. back to
Mexico, some folks claim that the U.S. ranks 9th in the world, just
behind France, in doling out foreign aid.

But hey.  Let's take a look at some numbers for comparison.  Here's a
short list from the UN Human Development Report 2002 -

Denmark spends 1.06% of its GNP on foreign aid.
Netherlands spends 0.84% of its GNP on foreign aid.
Norway spends 0.80% of its GNP on foreign aid.
Germany spends 0.27% of its GNP on foreign aid.
Japan spends 0.28% of its GNP on foreign aid.
Portugal spends 0.26% of its GNP on foreign aid.
Spain spends 0.22% of its GNP on foreign aid.
U.S. spends 0.1% of it GNP on foreign aid.

As can plainly be seen, Americans are nowhere near the most generous
people on Earth.  Even the Scandinavians are far more caring and giving.

Well, okay.  If given credit for help by the military, maybe the U.S.
ranks 19th out of 21 rather than dead last.
