There was an interesting sidelight on that.  During the '20s, the
Germans had a secret base in Russia, where they experimented with tanks.
The deal was sub rosa -- neither the German nor the Soviet governments
were involved.  It was strictly an under the table operation between the
German and Soviet Armies.

The Nazis later produced a double agent who fed documents on this
arrangement back to the Soviets.  The documents were genuine (the
Soviets could confirm that, because they had their own copies.)

But the "buck slips" -- the handwritten notes that sometimes accompamy
official documents -- were forged to paint a picture of treason by the
Soviet Army High Command.

When the Nazis attacked the Soviets, they were facing an army whose high
command had been slaughtered.

calamity to overtake the human race.

Oh, yeah!  The European Communists actually believed in Marxism, and
found out too late what the reality was.
