FS> GM> Now, here's your chance to be factual, Frank. Where's the evidence
FS> GM> that environmentalists LOVE spiking trees? Give the facts, Frank.
FS> GM> Name the people involved. Show that they did what you claim.
FS> GM> Show that they're environmentalists and not someone trying to
FS> GM> discredit environmentalists. Show that all environmentalists are
FS> GM> involved in this activity, or most of them, or even more than a few
FS> GM> and that they LOVE to do this. Be careful with the facts, Frank.

FS>All of that has been shown in the papers long ago, Gary. It's
FS>obvious that someone must love to do something if he's willing to
FS>climb trees to drive spikes into them. That's not an action
FS>anyone would do if he didn't really want to do it.

 VH> ENVIRONMENTALISTS CONVICTED

VH> Many environmentalists have been convicted in a court of law on
VH> diverse criminal and civil charges.

VH> October 3 1996. Helena, Montana. Earth Firster Ronald J. Constable,
VH> 27, was sentenced in federal court to one year in a federal
VH> penitentiary, $200 in restitution, one year of supervised probation and
VH> 500 hours of community service for tree spiking in an October 1993
VH> incident near Essex, Montana (see 1993). Constable was permanently
VH> prohibited from entering any state or federal public lands. In June
VH> 1996 he became the first person to be convicted under a 1988 federal
VH> law against tree spiking. An undercover agent found Earth First
VH> literature in his possession. Constable admitted affiliation with Earth
VH> First. "Tree-spiking conviction a first," Helena Independent Record,
 VH> Saturday, October 5, 1996, by Mark Goldstein, p. 1A.

VH> April 1, 1994. Kalispell, Montana. District Court Judge Michael Keedy
VH> sentenced two brothers, Earth Firsters Daniel Sean Carter and Michael
VH> Thomas Carter, for spiking trees, cutting down billboards and
VH> vandalizing logging equipment. Daniel pleaded guilty to 2 of 4 counts
VH> of felony criminal mischief, received nine years in prison, suspended,
VH> ordered to pay $5,884 in restitution and 200 hours community service.
VH> Two charges of cutting down signs were dismissed. Michael pleaded
VH> guilty to 3 of 12 counts of felony criminal mischief, was given 19
VH> years prison with all but 90 days in county jail suspended, ordered to
VH> pay $34,473 in restitution and 200 hours community service. Other
VH> charges of cutting down billboards were dismissed. Michael was also
VH> convicted of vandalizing equipment belonging to Schellinger
VH> Construction Company. The crimes were committed between December 1989
VH> and July 1991. The brothers worked as carpenters. "Carter brothers to
VH> pay $40,000 for spiking trees," Hungry Horse News, Thursday, April 7,
 VH> 1994, by Becky Shay, p. 25.

VH> 8/11/93. Spokane, Washington. Earth Firsters John P. Blount, 32, of
VH> Masonville, Colorado, and Jeffrey C. Fairchild, 27, Ashland,
VH> Wisconsin, were sentenced for convictions on two counts of tree spiking
VH> the Post Office Creek timber sale in Idaho in March 1989, two counts of
VH> destruction of federal property and two counts of conspiracy. Blount
VH> was handed a 17-month jail term and fined $1,000. Fairchild was given
VH> 60 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Both were ordered to pay a
VH> one-quarter share of the $19,639 in damage to spiked trees. A third
VH> defendant, Daniel A. LaCrosse, 36, Salem, New Hampshire, was charged
VH> with conspiracy to spike trees and conspiracy to destroy government
VH> property. Two other defendants, Arvid Hartley and Neil McClain were
VH> both sentenced to 90 days home detention and ordered to pay their share
VH> of the $19,639. "Clearwater Forest Trial Opens In Idaho Tree-Spiking
VH> Case - Lawyer Denies Intent To Harm Anyone," Lewiston Tribune, June 8,
 VH> 1993, by The Associated Press, p. 5A. See also, "U.S. tree-spiker
VH> sentences `surprisingly' stiff," Vancouver Sun (British Columbia),
 VH> August 17, 1993, by Neal Hall, p. C1.

VH> 6/4/93. Missoula, Montana. Arvid E. Hartley and Neil K. McLain pleaded
VH> guilty in federal court to misdemeanor charges of spiking trees in
VH> Idaho. They agreed to testify against three others accused in a
 VH> tree-spiking March 29, 1989. Accused were John Blount, Jeffrey C.
VH> Fairchild and Daniel A. LaCrosse. Hartley and McLain both admitted
VH> that they put metal spikes in trees with the intent to hinder a timber
VH> sale in the Post Office Creek area of the Clearwater National Forest
VH> near Powell, Idaho. "Two Plead Guilty To Spiking Trees To Stop Sales In
VH> Idaho," Portland Oregonian, Saturday, June 5, 1993, from correspondent
 VH> and wire reports, p. B8.

VH> 8/13/92. Cove/Mallard, Idaho. Three Earth First activists pleaded
VH> guilty to criminal trespass and spent 9 days in jail for locking
VH> themselves to road-construction equipment in Nez Perce National Forest.
VH> Tree-spiking discovered in old-growth timber stand nearby. The three
VH> had been charged with resisting arrest, obstructing justice and injury
VH> to a vehicle. Each was fined $100 and sentenced to 60 days in jail.

VH> VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Earth Liberation Front's press office in
VH> Portland, Ore., has released a statement from a group claiming
VH> responsibility for spiking hundreds of trees in the Gifford Pinchot
 VH> National Forest.

VH> A statement faxed from the anonymous group Friday said the spikes were
VH> designed to block logging on 99 acres of old-growth forest in the
VH> Upper Greenhorn timber sale. The forest is home to spotted owls, bear,
VH> lynx, wolf, goshawk and other wildlife, the statement said.

 VH> ********************************************

VH> VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Reuter - A radical U.S. environmental
VH> group said Tuesday it will send trained saboteurs to disrupt the
VH> logging of an ancient rain forest off Canada's west coast.

VH> The California-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said it will
VH> dispatch a crew of "trained ecotage agents" by boat to drive long
VH> nails into trees and sabotage logging equipment in Clayoquot Sound on
 VH> Vancouver Island.

Thanks, Vern, for not being as lazy as *I* am. Of course you're
wasting your time since "Gary Moore" (his current name) will
"accidentally" not see what you've posted. However, in the event
he *does* want to see it I've not deleted any of your posting.

... Afraid of banks? Why not give it to me for safekeeping!
