The Catholic Church was not entirely innocent in the matter.

Many bishops covered up the sex acts of priests, re-assigning those
priests to other parishes, paying off victims and their families, etc.
It was not until the Pope called them to task that bishops started
cleaning up their act.

All who molest little boys and girls should be prosecuted, to the
fullest extent of the law, whether they are a priest, a schoolteacher,
a lawyer, a doctor, or whatever.  And when an organization covers it
up, that organization should be taken to task and held accountable.

If a lawyer molests little boys and girls, and the American Bar
Association covers it up, the lawyer and the ABA should be held
accountable.  If a doctor molests little boys and girls, and the
American Medical Association covers it up, the doctor and the
AMA should be held accountable.  The same applies to priests and
the Catholic Church.

It's more than a case of individuals being perverts.  The pedophelia
scandal was systematic, and had gone on for decades.  Nothing was done
about it until the media focused on the issue, forcing the Pope to get
involved.

It will take decades for the Catholic Church to recover.  If ever.
