You don't think the oil companies shut those refineries down do you?  The
environmental whackos have tied them up in court for years with environmental
impact studies, restraining orders, propoganda that cause the NIMBY syndrome,
etc.  If you can't get the state and local permits to build such a facility, it
doesn't get built.  Sooner or later, the ones you have left reach a point of
not being able to keep up with demand due to worn out, outdated equipment,
breakage, etc.  Then you end up with shortages and high prices.

Like hell it isn't.  The oil companies had, ALL of them, had only Regular and
Premium for decades.  Then they were forced to make Unleaded Regular, and then
the EPA mandated different blends based on time of year and location to cut
down on hydrocarbon emissions.  Most of the improvements in air quality have
come from getting old clunker cars off the road, and from computerizing
ignition systems, not from different blends of gas.

Nobody said anything about damaging the environment.  Besides, it isn't a case
of damage or no damage. No oil company would build a refinery today without
proper safeguards in place.  To do otherwise is simply too expensive.

We get less than half our oil from the Mideast.  They don't have as much
control over prices as they think they do, at least not with us.
