  There were a handful of defectors/scientists whose testimony was 
deemed exaggerated and unreliable, and this is what most nay-sayers 
try to dismiss -all- defectors and scientists with, typically by partisan 
hacks and mainstream news accounts.   However, Saddam had more than 500 
scientists on his pay roll, many of whom ended up dead just before and 
during our initial invasion in '03.  There is more than just one set 
of accounts from defectors, scientists and journalists on the matter, 
the likes of which continue to surface to this day and which our major 
media continues to ignore.

    Bill Tierney, a former military intelligence officer and Arabic  
speaker who worked as a counter-infiltration operator in Baghdad in 2004 
and who was also an inspector (1996-1998) for the UN (UNSCOM) for 
overseeing the elimination Iraq's WMD, has translated numerous captured 
Iraqi documents and tried to presented many of his findings to ABC, but 
was dismissed out of hand without even being listened to by these 
media/partisan hacks who were obviously stonewalling anything that 
would give credence to justifying the '03 invasion of Iraq.
Might want to look into what he has to say, while you're at it.

  None of them want to entertain the question:  Why wouldn't Saddam 
pursue biological weapons?   Why not??   Esp since the knowledge and 
expertise to do so was certainly available for the right price. Like 
you say, Saddam had reason to possess Bio's. He also he had the money, 
and he had 100's of scientists at his disposal.

  In any event, Saddam's long history is rife with Bio' development and 
research.  For example, Iraq admitted in a series of meetings held Aug 
17-20, 1995, with UN envoy Rolf Ekeus that it had produced biological 
weapons.  There are numerous other accounts.  Here below are a couple 
more accounts.  There are many more if you care to put the partisan 
blinders aside and really do some reading and honest evaluation.  
There is just too much to ignore, esp in light of Saddam's 
sordid history.

BAGHDAD SAID REBUILDING BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS PLANT. Under the pretext of 
responding to the spread of hoof-and-mouth disease, Saddam Husseyn is 
rebuilding a plant at Al-Daura that was used to make biological weapons 
during the Gulf War, London's "Sunday Times" reported on 15 April. 
But as of this date, Baghdad has said that Iraq is free of any incidence

Iraqi scientists are said to have stored smallpox bought in recent years 
from Russian scientists.

The "Foreign Report" staff asks how dangerous Iraq's biological program is. 
They quote a Middle East specialist familiar with the Iraqi efforts. He 
said that Iraq has not yet worked out how to launch a Scud missile with a 
biological warhead through the atmosphere in small containers at a specific
target. "It is most unlikely that this problem has been solved," he said. 
"It is unknown if even the Americans or the Russians have solved it."

  That's the simplistic and naive excuse in a nutshell parroted by 
partisan hacks..  one which ignores history and all the other accounts 
by defectors/scientists and Iraqi journalists, and one which ignores the 
question:  'Why would Saddam NOT pursue Bio's, since he had the money 
and scientists?'
