 There are several groups involved in getting us into Iraq. The
 munitions companies are very small players. Even the
 reconstruction companies are not all that big, even with
 Haliburton. Their oil buisness is their lifeblood.

 Oil was the key, and there were two players. The Neocons were
 the main ideologues. Big oil was the main money interest. They
 had opposing interests to a great extent. Big oil didn't have
 that much to gain from the war. They wanted to replace Saddam,
 but that could have been done with a coup. The neocons wanted to
 bring down Saddam, and replace the entire Iraqi govt and
 economic system. Their plan included privatizing the entire
 economy, esp the oil industry.

 The expected to expand Iraqi oil production far beyond OPEC
 limits. Their ultimate goal was to break OPEC. That ran up
 against Big Oil, who profit from OPEC's price gouging. Big oil
 has the money. Big oil won. Unfortunately the prize is a war in
 progress. OTOH, Big Oil doesn't care if Iraq's oil fields stay
 out of production for a decade, or maybe a generation.

 I have heard that before. I think it's bull. Kennedy was a
 dedicated and fervent anti-communist, as was LBJ. As were
 practically all of them. I do not believe he would have pulled
 out quickly. He did not want to lose another battle to
 communism. Remember, he was an admirer of McCarthy, at least
 before the Army hearings.

 But Oil has the big money. Read Greg Palast's "Armed Madhouse"
 for a look at just how corrupt it really is.
