There was no economic incentive for his pals though so Darfur was one of those
easily ignored things. aFter all, if nobody that's one of the select few can
get rich there's no need to bother.

Terrorism needs an ideologue to frame the problems faced by disaffected people
in such a way that they see no hope in  the future.  IF the ideologue is good
enough with the rhetoric and there are enough disaffected souls to follow
along, (it only takes a few to gain widespread attention. COmbine the deep
pockets of the Saudis with thousands of disaffected youth in the middle east
you have the perfect  recipe.

tHose disaffected youth know they have no way to influence much of the world
around them.  their countries' leaders don't need their conscent to govern as
they have the oil revenues and can hire the armies. FOr most of them the
economic outlook is quite bleak.  take that disaffected youth, let him listen
to some fiery speeches and you easily convince him to become the next human
bomb.

the ultimate in squandered opportunities, for the American people as well as
for his administration.

AFter the taliban rout the next phase would have been to improve the economic
outlook for the people there.  wHen you show a person a possibility of a bright
future and the possibility that his hard work will net him security and enough
to eat he's less reason to resort to hate and eventually to terrorism.

Then it proved to be a golden opportunity to enrich some cronies and an
argument to circumvent constitutional processes.
