Agreed, the other, and third choice that nobody wants to talk about is a major
change in lifestyle for most of the developed world's population.

Yes, but the most important part of the equation is one that everybody would
rather not discuss, and by everybody I mean our political leaders of all
stripes the world over.  That's some real population control.  But, back to 
energy ...

true enough, and places such as CHina are fast becoming major polluters with
folks trading in bicycles and feet for cars. We have to get that power
somewhere if we want our transportation infrastructure to run on electrical
power, even with better more efficient battery technologies that power has to
be gotten to the battery from somewhere, and that's the grid.  we want our
fresh caught seafood in the midwest, and our tomatoes in Canada. WE don't want
our 3.5 brats going to soccer practice on the city bus, and we want two cars in
every garage and food not locally produced in the pot.
THe third alternative:  YOu eat what is grown and raised local to you.  YOu
ride your bike; walk; take a bus. YOu dry your clothes in the open air on a
line; wash your dishes by hand.  Grab a hammer instead of that air nailer; the
armstrong screwdriver instead of your handy black & decker with the handy drill
chuckable driver bits.

Otherwise we smooch the SAudi Barbarians' behinds until the oil runs out.
