Ärende: 35 Years after Roe
==========================
Hi BOb,

Bob Klahn wrote in a message to Richard Webb:

RW> Wish that abortion was totally
RW> unnecessary, and though not in conformance with my

BK> That is why I am a democrat.

RW> religious views I can not make decisions for others.

BK> None of us can. Which doesn't mean we don't get to express an
BK> opinion of how it *SHOULD* be.

True, and why I strongly believe in liberty and feel that the two major parties
have failed the American people in many aspects of life.

BK>> Which is why the drive to the bottom, as exemplified by
BK>> Wallmart, IMO, is one of the big forces driving the decline of
BK>> this country.

RW> YEt we keep encouraging it in the name of short term
RW> profits. That balance sheet dictates all our decisions.

BK> Maybe you do, I don't. I don't shop walmart. I chose locally owned
BK> establishments when possible.

dItto, but collectively we encourage this short term balance sheet bottom line
thinking. IN fact, I try to avoid anything to do with WAl Mart.

RW> Different definitions of the same thing. You say glass
RW> half full, I say glass half empty.

BK> And the corporate re-engineer says you have twice as much glass as
BK> you need.

GOod point!!!

RW>> we prevent said breakdown when we teach our young people to
RW>> think critically and not just cram a few facts into their
RW>> heads and leave them to go their own way.

BK>> I see a big part being in the breakdown of the extended family.
BK>> When Reagan said the unemployed should vote with their feet, move
BK>> to where the jobs were, he contributed to that breakdown.

<snippage>
RW> Again agreed, the extended family is one of the reasons I
RW> formed the values I did. My grandparents were as big a
RW> part of my upbringing as my parents were.

BK> I used to call my grandmother long after I was an adult, just to
BK> talk. Not wanting to fail the family was a good reason to keep to
BK> the straight and narrow.

SPent a lot of time even in adulthood hanging out with my grandparents whenever
possible. THey were a large part of my upbringing.

 RW>> Since the
RW>> education system has not been prepared to do this it's the
RW>> parents' job. IN the past this has been an assumption
RW>> within the educational sector, and often still is. YEt many
RW>> parents are unable or unwilling to take on this vital role.

BK>> What you are describing starts with the parents pre-school, but
BK>> should continue into the schools. It's a life long process.

RW> But it doesn't start when the kids are dumped off at day
RW> care and plunked in front of a television set. IT never

BK> Exactly.

RW> begins to happen. IN extreme cases it ends up with cases
 RW> like COlumbine.

BK> In the extreme.
BUt long before it gets to such extremes cited above we have adults who cannot
function properly as part of society if they're raised this way, and many are
these days.

BK>> The breakdown of society is more a matter of pitting people
BK>> against each other, IMO. And the cure is to bring people to work
BK>> together to build society. However, when a growing segment of our
BK>> population sees their portion of society declining, being washed
BK>> away under their feet, they lose their committment to the rest of
BK>> society.

RW> AS long as it's in the economic interests of a few with all
RW> the resources though it's bound to continue. Frank
RW> HErbert's "Hydraulic despotism" at work. In the desert the
RW> man who controls the water hole will be king.

BK> Yep. Can't recall who wrote the book, but I heard of it as a Water
BK> Empire. Same principle.

Yep, understood it a bit before then, but when I first read Herbert's Dune as a
young man it brought the concept into sharp focus for me.

Regards,
           Richard
