YEp, I use it for cable qrm and also for electrical
powerline qrm.  IF I've got it in the aircraft vhf band
(where radio direction finding is much easier than those
little ferrite rods on the AM broadcast band) I've got ammo
to present to the utility company.

ONe time years ago I called in with a problem.  THis was
when I lived in Iowa.  I told the folks it only happened on
dry days.
AFter I got through the flunky on the phone who kept telling me my problem was
the vcr I didn't own they followed up.  HE came, fixed that one.  Another
similar problem, again, only
on dry days.

GUy waits until a wet day, shows up with meter in hand.  I
told him we had no problem that day, but I could point him
to the exact pole.  wE went for a walk.  I showed him the
setup I use for hidden transmitter hunting on vhf.

HE comes back a couple days later. battery in his fancy
searching gizmotron is dead.  WE take my foxhunting rig and
go hunting.  A crew fixes it the next day, and tech gives me his cell phone
number.  TElls me that even though I have to
go through the hoops with the service center to call him and let him know I
turned in a report.
HIs fera of being the guy on the receiving end of bean
counter wrath when the faa man calls made him give me that
number <g>.

My carer has been audio, but I started as a kid in shortwave listening.  IMho
the airwaves are as sacrosanct as the air
we breathe.

The whims of the individuals with plenty of money.  then not really, but the
whims of corporations wishing to sell them
more overpriced disposable junk to chuck in a landfill when
it breaks inside of six months, or is outdated.

BK>  Understood.

wIreless networking is nice.  IF you're into that it's nice
to go into starbucks and surf the net from your laptop while drinking your
latte.  tHen you want that blockbuster film to come off nice, and on budget
because if films are made on
budget prices don't go up at the multiplex.  YOu want the
cops and firemen to respond and be able to transmit your ekg to the hospital.

THen, even though you don't think about it, you want to be
able to get a message to uncle JOe that you're fine and safe after the tornado
or earthquake takes your home.  You're
glad to see my emergency communications setup and my wire
strung between two trees or portable masts.  YOu also want
to tune your hundred channels of digital cable and watch
what you wish.  THe balancing act which makes all this
possible is not easily done, and can't be done properly by
bean counters and politicians.
