IBM 1401.  The 1402 was a line printer. <g>

Back in the 1960s one of the guys in the computer room called up and told
me to come down, that he had something to show me.  They had a 1401 and
1402 down there.  So I go down there and he cranks up a program on the
1401 and tells me to check the printer.  I check the printer and it's spitting
out
garbage and I said so.  He said "*LISTEN* to it," and I did - it was playing
"She'll be Comin; 'round the Mountain" with the hammers and print chain.  You
could do that sort of thing with those high speed chain printers - just one
more
neat thing lost to those quiet ink jet and laser printers. <g>

The 1401 had a whopping 64KB of iron core memory and was state-of-the-art
when it came out in about 1958.  It didn't really have an OS as such, the
operators
had to manually load and start each application, and the programmers had to
worry
about timing loops for each i/o device to insure that data wasn't dropped or
corrupted in transit.

BTW, I acquired the CD set you were interested in from Amazon, the label is
West Hill and the serial is CD 1017, titled "American Pop - A Musical
History."  The particular cut I had referred to ("You're A Grand Old Rag")
was done in February of 1906 by Billy Murray.

For those who were out of this particular loop I had noted that the original
title of George M. Cohan's "You're a Grand Old Flag" was "You're a Grand
Old Rag."  Obviously the lyric 'rag' was changed to 'flag' throughout the
song.
