AH> Hmm. Sounds to me as if there are essentially two choices, grab

AH>
AH> I believe the problem has more to do with a change in philosophy
AH> with the actual number of disabled adults who aren't seniors. The idea is
AH> such people can, with appropriate support, live in the community rather tha

AH> support system isn't there... it's been cut back or grafted onto something
AH> like the "seniors-only" building which now has a bunch of younger tenants.

Yeah, and now my place is swinging back to a more seniors-focussed environment,
in an attempt to say that Campbell is keeping his promises regarding senior
beds and "aging in place". . . :P

AH> GP> but what happens is the seniors really resent the
AH> GP> disabled coming into "their" territory! :(
AH>
AH>
AH> Well... some folks (not just seniors) feel threatened by change.
AH> saddened by the apparent "them & us" mentality too. Again, not all seniors
AH> like that. It could be more a matter of mental flexibility than anything e

Yeah. . . :( "Divide & Conquer" is a popular tactic for government! :(

AH> I suspect they'd rather think of themselves as seniors than as pe
AH> with disabilities. It's ironic, in a way, because a lot of seniors fear lo
AH> their autonomy. One might think you could be an inspiration to them, show
AH> that there *is* life after a major stroke. Maybe they'd rather not be remi
AH> that they are more at risk for the same thing as they grow older, however.

The main issues they have involve those with mental disabilities, as they say
they fear what they might do (there have been just enough incidents to make
them feel justified in their attitudes/prejudice.) :(

Then, of course, they lump all of us(younger people) in together. . . :P

They complain that in the old days they used to have spontaneous events
(potlucks, etc.) but with today's demographic it doesn't happen so often (they
neglect to point out that they themselves aren't either, while busily blaming
the young people & the Asians!) :(

AH> She's still working on it! I understand most people make very li
AH> progress after the first year because they don't sustain the effort, but we
AH> seeing improvement even now. And we've also met a few adults who have show
AH> by example what Nora might be able to do one day if she hangs in there....

As the docs explained it to me -- there's a "threshhold" that occurs
about 20-24 weeks after the event(stroke/etc.) -- with far less progress
occurring after that. . . (I've seen cases that belie this claim, but I think
most hear that & think, "Oh well, I'm done." (I basically did, but didn't have
a lot of choice, as the system wouldn't fund further physio for me. . . an
acquaintance on the Handidart pays her own ($800.00/month *yeeegs!*) because of
this. :( (another like sum for rent & her $1,000 or so for disability doesn't
go far!)
