Ärende: Food & Drugs... 2B.
============================
Heya:

I'm just winging these messages out. No proofread to speak of, and I may have
to keep it that way. I have timely messages in my upload file, with this post
awaiting responding. If I don't crank out a post to this now, your message goes
buried in an old download file. It's the worst part about OLMR, but one I have
to work around.

It's the same old story, that the quips are easy to pound out, but the thought
provoking messages, get shortchanged.

On or about: 11-15-06 10:32, Ardith Hinton did engage James Bradley regarding,
but not limited to: Food & Drugs... 2B.

JB> How a spice could calm a stomach is news to me too.

AH> Yeah. I wonder if what certain spices do is to
AH> irritate the bowel & keep things moving along. That may be
AH> a factor with Nora. She often uses the word "tummy" as
AH> children do, indicating the area around the belly button.
 AH> ;-)

As I do... <L> I called a part of my large intestines, as tubie stuff, when I
couldn't recall the proper term at a doctor visit last year.

JB> Usually, Wesabi <SP?> is more than a sharp garnish, it
JB> is a required enzyme substitute to cooking the fishies.

 AH> Hmm... I didn't know that. I imagine the
AH> Japanese know what they're doing, however, because they've
AH> been eating the same way for a long time. Our ancestors
AH> may not have understood vitamins, enzymes, etc. the way we
AH> do now... but I think there is a lot of folk wisdom in
 AH> certain traditional combinations.

I'm sure machismo, and trial and error played a part. One fella is puking his
guts out, and the other is vibrant. Lady A ate a pointy fish and died, where
lady B removed the glands first...

JB> A table-spoon full of vinegar is the best fix for
 JB> acid reflux.

AH> Any particular kind? I'm surprised because
AH> vinegar is usually acid. Calcium and/or magnesium sounds
AH> more logical, and seems to help.... :-)

Why swing the acid content, when you want to even it out? A Tums only swings
the pendulum, and can't even start to sway the ph balance by much. Hydrochloric
acid is so strong, a whole roll of Tums may up the ph by a point.

Hence my assumption the cap(whatever it's called) oil in a hot pepper, will
reinforce the acid balance. Fighting it, requires the secretions increase to
counteract the foreign substance.

AH> Yes. I've always tried to encourage her to be aware of what
AH> her body is telling her... and it paid off when she was in
AH> treatment for leukemia! I've never been on chemo myself,
AH> so I had to depend on her to show me what her needs were.
AH> Then I would hit the books to find out why, for example,
AH> she wanted pork chops every day for the two weeks she was
AH> taking a certain drug. It's too much of a stretch for some
AH> grownups to accept the idea that a preschooler might know
AH> more about what is going on in her own body than they do.
AH> But I keep doing the same thing because it seems to work
AH> for us, and I learn a lot that way.... :-)

And then I learned, taste buds, and the sense of smell diminish with age. When
us kids used to hate walking into a building in Heritage Park, (A collection of
old buildings, and environments.) it was because we smelled the 'old' much more
profusely than when we grew up.

AH> [re my aunt's theory that fish don't feel pain]
JB> Maybe you were young enough, not to be encumbered by
JB> fancy scientific justifications. Someone did a study,
JB> that does give the fishes ownership of feelings.

AH> Uh-huh. I know of a study indicating plants experience fear
AH> as well. I think many folks assume that because some other
AH> living being doesn't have the same receptors we do, they
AH> don't experience what we do *at all*. They say cats don't
AH> see colours. But they can't explain to my satisfaction why
AH> both cats who shared our home for many years... when they
AH> saw an assortment of decorations on the Christmas tree...
AH> almost invariably batted off the red ones first, then the
AH> yellow ones, then others (including bright colours such as
AH> silver & gold). The same preferences, incidentally, are
AH> typical of human babies & toddlers.... :-)

(Thinking out of my hat.) They see a distinct image in the red spectrum, as if
they are looking into a globe-like mirror. Blue... Not so much. <???>

I have another marathon session to answer right now, so I do think you both
will have to suffice with a little of a brush off. Nothing personal.

... James
