Ärende: Generalizations
=======================
On or about: 11-22-06 13:20, Ardith Hinton did engage James Bradley regarding,
but not limited to: Generalizations

JB> we were practicing generalizations, and predjudice.
JB> We suposed, Canadians, are more apt to say, "You are
JB> an idiot. (...Because I don't understand how your
JB> suggestion might help the project/make their life
 JB> better.)"

AH> I'm not sure whether this is chiefly a North American
AH> phenomenon or a temperament thing... but I've encountered it in
AH> various situations & I notice a lot of it in certain echoes too.

We were exersizing our right to be ridiculous. <-;

AH> I'd be interested in hearing about studies as to the
AH> relative percentages of the temperaments in other parts of
AH> the world. I guess some folks believe it's more polite to
AH> make "you" statements because that is what they were taught
 AH> and/or because they're oriented toward what's going on
AH> outside their own minds. There are a few, however, who say
AH> "That's stupid!" or "You're stupid!" because (according to
AH> them) they're just stating a fact... yet they're quite

That's not "right!" <LMAO>

AH> indignant when others say the same about them. Why?? Oh,
AH> that's because it's not true, because they are highly
AH> intelligent & these other people are lying! Maybe I'm not
AH> as bright as they are... but I prefer simple homespun rules
AH> like "Do as you would be did by". They seem to work for
 AH> me, anyway. ;-)

Ya, sure, it'd be nice if manners would make a resurgence. Just for example, I
have noticed a good portion of blacks in my neighbourhood, are not descendants
of the US slave industry. They are newly landed immigrants. One person notices
how sweet they are, and another notices how nasty they are.

I don't want to debate if they are good people or not, but I have noticed a
real humility to the majority of their mannerisms, but I've also noticed an
element that play up the fact that they look like gangsters when they wear the
sporting attire.

Are they kind and gentle, or aspiring crypt/blood? That question is in the same
category of ridiculousness. There may be an air of truth in both
generalizations, but there is room for both observations, in my opinion.

I propose, us North Americans, are more apt to criticize and condemn, than
pause and learn. Again, I know this is a sweeping statement, and I'm FAR from
being a behavioural scientist. I may also pose, this may also be a common trait
of the Eastern Europeans. I just don't have personal experience with anything
but us North Americans, and immigrants to our society. My test pool is
admittedly small to begin with. Maybe, I was just bumping into butt-holes that
day. <G>

AH> What else can one do? If they're determined to
AH> think you're an idiot because they just can't bring
AH> themselves to admit they have no idea what you're talking
AH> about, it's probably a waste of time trying to change their
 AH> minds. :-/

Going back to what you said about the "sound bite" brain. If I can't strap them
down, prop their eyelids open...

I just have to be less hard on myself, because someone will not listen to a
challenge to their sensibility, no matter how convoluted their perception of
facts may be. It's just disappointing that: A) You put more stock into their
intelligence. B) You didn't walk away at the first sign of perpetual ignorance.
That's as much self blame as I can take, but when I care for a person, I have a
hard time letting them go along on their errant paths.

When I have that internal dialogue, "I told you so." I instictively feel likel
cuffing them on the back of the head.

 JB> I *know* when I've a bump on the log, but I have a
JB> *real* chore in prying myself away from them.

AH> Sometimes it is possible to avoid such
AH> individuals, but it may not be easy... that's where being
AH> able to make the translation comes in handy. If you find
AH> yourself doing the latter day after day, month after month,
AH> and year after year it can be wearing. IMHO you're right
AH> to reserve it for special occasions.

L!!! Like birthdays, and holiday/family meals? I've been trying to get dad back
online, but his couch-surfing g-friend just showed up today. (She's 20
something, going on forty fast, and he's seventy.) He knows what I think of
her, she knows what I think of her, and I offered to wait outside to give dad a
ride. He wanted my company with her, I guess as a buffer, but I also didn't see
her leave when he did. That's his grave, but it is disappointing that he hasn't
put his foot down, like his big language says he does.

AH> I hear you! BTW, I think you meant "revere" and
 AH> "reverence".... ;-)

How did you know my spell checking is broken? I told you these were going to
fly a little looser from now on? <L!!!>

JB> thing he tought me was to find my own answers.

AH> He may not have planned it that way, but it's a
 AH> good lesson.... :-))

Can't argue that! Mind you, I can't wash my cloths, with the new washer-dryer
sitting in the snow either. "Why didn't anyone teach me how to haul those by
myself?" <L>

The amputation specialist, gave me the OK to lift heavy objects, so you know
it's just like me to look for heavy things to lift. "Why didn't anyone teach me
moderation?"

JB> 'Lord, please see to everyones safty that may
JB> cross the path of "The Beast".' <VBWEG>

AH> Now where did I put my whip & chair?? Oh well.
AH> I don't seem to need them very much these days, at least
AH> not in this echo... [chuckle].

I'll try to behave, but it may just be *how* I behave...

The beast was just outfitted with a new master cylinder on the brake pump, so
the pedestrians can go with peace in front of it again. Now, to my behaviour
behind a keyboard... [-|
