I have to say that Part I of the pilot for LOST really kept an interesting
pace while having some nice characterization.   There was a feeling that all
of these characters were very different and there was some interesting
cultural differences (and even some possible language barriers), as well.

From  the moment the doctor wakes up in the middle of the jungle, the show
begins a breakneck pace of action and suspense.   The fear of everyone at
the scene of the plane crash seemed very realistically portrayed with many
running around in fear while others are too paralyzed to move.   There's
also the sense that we're meeting these characters as they meet each other,
so not only are they mysteries to each other, but they are also mysteries to
us.   As such, we don't know what the agendas of any of these people are,
who's "good" and who's "bad."  The tone of the pilot gives us some hints,
such as the somewhat sinister undertone that's been put on seemingly
good-natured British musician Charlie (what *was* he doing in the airplane's
bathroom?), but of course those could easily be turned around later.

Beyond the mysteries of the characters, there's also mystery in the island
and why the plane crashed (maybe it had something to do with the
aforementioned bathroom, as many people were running that way right before
the crash?).    So far, we have some kind of unseen monster (the scariest
sort) that's stalking the survivors.

Of course, the biggest problem a series like this faces is sustaining all
this over time.   Still, with 48 survivors and lots of mystery to unfold,
not to mention life-and-death struggles against the wild, I think there's
enough material to chew on for a while.   This is easily the best premiere
I've seen so far and I can see why it did very well in that ratings...

On the other hand, there's SMALLVILLE...  It wasn't all that bad, but it
seemed pretty rushed, especially when it came time to turn Kal-El back into
Clark... using "Black Kryptonite" (which, as far as I know, is a completely
new invention entirely...) to cause this transformation seemed far too easy
a plot device of something that could've been used to fuel an entire episode
of Clark vs. Kal.
