That's my point.  No actual records or details.

Then again, a lot of what was going on with ENT vintage Ferengi may well
have been simply garbled into their being just another unknown species of
alien which wasn't adequately cataloged.

Or, they didn't want anyone looking at them.   The Romulans have never been
very free with any information about themselves... and any initial
conflicts involving war would suggest that the less your enemy knows about
you, the better.

Easy enough.   However:

And of course, the name evolved from the planet they settled, Romulus...
one would assume...  although then again both Romulus and Remus are Earth
legend/mythology names applied to stars...  oh well, whatever works.

Even though there remains Spocks commentary in B0T about how Vulcans
believe Romulans to be offshoots of Vulcans...  and thus shouldn't be
surprised to encounter them and thus would suspect that Romulans would
indeed look like Vulcans, which is what happened.   

One would think that Vulcan would, with their tech, be capable of finding
out what happened during that split... particularly since they had already
developed space travel thousands of years earlier.   Somebody would have
been curious and figured it out... Vulcan isn't that isolationist... after
all, they did investigate Earth.   

I simply find the notion that Vulcan would ferret Earth out but not
investigate what became of the Rihannsu/Romulan offshoots to be a bit of a
YATI.

As Spock said more than once, "I would not make that assumption".   

Perhaps there will be some additional enlightenment in the upcoming seasons
episodes...  which certainly look like they're going to be a better batch
than what's been coming from the likes of B&B in the past.
