LVM == Logical Volume Manager.

Logical volume management provides a higher-level view of the disk storage 
on a computer system than the traditional view of disks and partitions. 
This gives the system administrator much more flexibility in allocating 
storage to applications and users.

Using LVM, you create Volume Groups.  Each VG consists of one or more 
Physical Volumes.  These are real hard drive partitions, or 'pseudo' 
partitions such as RAID partitions.  You can add PVs to, or remove PVs 
from a VG at any time.  Once you have a VG, you can allocate some or all 
of the space in the VG to various Logical Volumes.  LV's function exactly 
as if they were disk partitions.  You can build filesystems on them, mount 
and unmount them, store data on them and just use them just like a real 
disk partition.

This machine has a VG called "satavg" which consists of 186.12 Gbytes on a 
single SATA drive.  (I hope to add a second SATA drive to the system in a 
month or so, and place it in the "satavg" volume group.)  I created 
logical volumes from this VG.  They are called "srclv" (1 Gb), "wwwlv" (2 
Gb), "musiclv" (80 Gb) and "xtralv" (2 Gb).  On each of these LVs I 
created a Reiser Filesystem and mounted them for use.  The remaining space 
in the VG (approx. 81 Gb) was unallocated and unused.

Today while ripping some CDs, I realised that I might run short of space 
in /music filesystem.  I ran 'lvextend' to add 10 Gb extra space to the 
"musiclv", from the free space in "satavg".  Then I ran 'resize_reiserfs' 
to take advantage of the increased size.  All while still ripping to the 
filesystem!  And the whole process took only seconds to complete.

Now that the encode is complete and the space freed up, I have 27 gig free 
in the filesystem, which is much more than I need.  I may resize the 
filesystem *down* by 10-15 gig, then 'lvreduce' to put the extra space 
back into the unused pool of space in the VG.  But since I have lots of 
space in my free pool, I may just leae things as they are.
