We may or may not have been talking about people in IRC, but those people 
are not automatically the people who are "running the distro."

Well, first of all, the man pages are a package that can be installed (or 
not) at the installers discression.  But the packages are not created by 
the maintainers of the distros.  They just make the man pages available on 
the CD as a package, ready to be installed.

Secondly, and correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't man pages be of little 
use when installing the OS, since in order to *use* the man pages, you 
have to have 8already* installed toe OS?

Give it a shot.  See if it is doable or not.

Ok, fair enough.  But the definition of "some idea of what they are doing 
on computers" is now open for discussion.

How I look at it is that the more flexible the process, the more choices 
will have to be presented to the user.  This in turn sort of requires that 
the user has even *more* of an idea of what they are doing that when 
installing an OS that only requires you to insert the CD and walk away.

Slackware, for instance, allows you to initially slice up your HD into 
various slices, and then later specify different slices for your 
filesystem tree.  IOW, I can tell the installer to put (say) /home on a 
separate hard disk.  I usually put /usr/src and /var/www on separate 
slices as well.  Now in order to take advantage of this facility, you have 
to know *more* about the process of slicing disks, and about how the OS 
organizes itself on disk.
