W32/Tompai-A
Type
Win32 executable file virus
Detection
At the time of writing, Sophos has received just one report of this virus
from the wild.
Description
W32/Tompai-A is a virus with backdoor functionality for the Windows
platform, which spreads via network shares.
The virus creates three copies of itself in the Windows system folder.
One copy is named mainsv.exe. The others are randomly chosen from the
following pairs of names:
loadms.exe & loadmsnt.exe
cmpku.exe & cmpkunt.exe
netcompt.exe & netcomptnt.exe
ptsnopt.exe & ptsnoptnt.exe
ntdllf.exe & ntdllfnt.exe
The virus also infects exe files on the local hard disk and creates
copies of itself with the following names:
the_matrix.scr
mario_2.pif
matrix_desktop.pif
mp3_convert.pif
Zsnes_win.pif
VRMLpad_crack.pif
matrix3Dsetup.pif
Dx_ball2_Setup.pif
Crack_tools.exe
In order to ensure that the virus is run each time Windows starts
W32/Tompai-A adds the registry entry:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Cmpnt.
The backdoor functionality of the virus allows a remote attacker access
to the infected computer.
Hidden inside the worm is a piece of text which does not get displayed:

from the wild.
Description
W32/Rbot-FC is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares.
It also contains backdoor Trojan functionality, allowing unauthorised
remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels while running in
the background as a service process.
W32/Rbot-FC spreads to network shares with weak passwords as a result of
the backdoor Trojan element receiving the appropriate command from a
remote user.
W32/Rbot-FC copies itself to the Windows System folder as WINSYST32.EXE
and creates entries at the following locations in the registry so as to
run itself on system startup:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Microsoft IT Update = winsyst32.exe
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
Microsoft IT Update = winsyst32.exe
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Microsoft IT Update = winsyst32.exe
W32/Rbot-FC may try to delete network shares and also try to log
keystrokes and window text to a file with a CRF extension in the root
folder.
W32/Rbot-FC can collect the CD keys of several popular computer games
and applications.

Win32 worm
Detection
At the time of writing, Sophos has received just one report of this worm
from the wild.
Description
W32/Rbot-ET is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares.
It also contains backdoor Trojan functionality, allowing unauthorised
remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels while running in
the background as a service process.
W32/Rbot-ET spreads with the filename PACKARD.EXE to network shares with
weak passwords and via network security exploits as a result of the
backdoor Trojan element receiving the appropriate command from a remote
user.
W32/Rbot-ET copies itself to the Windows system folder using a random
7-character filename and creates entries at the following locations in
the registry with a value name of "Windows Media Player Update " so as
to run itself on system startup, resetting these values every 4 seconds:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

W32/Rbot-EQ
Type
Win32 worm
Detection
At the time of writing, Sophos has received just one report of this worm
from the wild.
Description
W32/Rbot-EQ is a member of the W32/Rbot family of worms with backdoor
capabilities. The worm has the ability to spread via network shares with
weak passwords.
In order to run automatically when Windows starts up the worm copies
itself as suchost.exe in the Windows system folder and adds the
following registry entries to ensure the worm is run during windows
logon:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Automatic Microsoft Windows Updater = SUCHOST.EXE
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Automatic Microsoft Windows Updater = SUCHOST.EXE
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
Automatic Microsoft Windows Updater = SUCHOST.EXE
When run the worm attempts to connect to a remote IRC server. This
connection is used as a control channel that allows a malicious user
access to the infected computer.
W32/Rbot-DE
Aliases
W32/Sdbot.worm.gen.k, Backdoor.Rbot.gen
Type
Win32 worm
Detection
At the time of writing, Sophos has received just one report of this worm
from the wild.
Description
W32/Rbot-DE is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares.
It also contains backdoor Trojan functionality, allowing unauthorised
remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels while running in
the background as a service process.
W32/Rbot-DE spreads to network shares with weak passwords and via
network security exploits as a result of the backdoor Trojan element
receiving the appropriate command from a remote user.
W32/Rbot-DE copies itself to the Windows system folder as WINSYS32.EXE
and creates entries at the following locations in the registry so as to
run itself on system startup, trying to reset them every minute:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
W32/Rbot-DE sets the following registry entries, trying to reset them
every 2 minutes.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\EnableDCOM = "N"
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\restrictanonymous = "1"
W32/Rbot-DE tries to delete the C$, D$, E$, IPC$ and ADMIN$ network
shares on the host computer every 2 minutes.
W32/Rbot-DE attempts to terminate certain processes related to
anti-virus and security programs including REGEDIT.EXE, MSCONFIG.EXE and
NETSTAT.EXE.
W32/MyDoom-O
Aliases
WORM_MYDOOM.M, I-Worm.Mydoom.m
Type
Win32 worm
Detection
Sophos has received many reports of this worm from the wild.
Description
W32/MyDoom-O is a mass-mailing worm which spreads by emailing itself via
its own SMTP engine. The worm also allows unauthorised remote access to
the computer via a network. When first run the worm copies itself to
either the Windows or Temp folders as java.exe and adds one of the
following registry entries to ensure that the copy is run each time
Windows starts:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\JavaVM
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\JavaVM
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Services
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Services
W32/MyDoom-O also creates a file named services.exe in the Windows or
Temp folder and runs the file. Services.exe is the backdoor component of
W32/MyDoom-O
W32/MyDoom-O searches the hard disk email addresses. The worm searches
files with the extensions PL*, PH*, TX*, HT*, ASP, TBB, SHT*, WAB, ADB
and DBX and the Windows address book. In addition the worm may use an
internet search engine to find more email addresses. The worm will send
a query to the search engine using domain names from email addresses
found on the hard disk and then examine the query results, searching for
more addresses. The internet search engines used by W32/MyDoom-O and the
percentage chance that each is used are:
www.google.com (45%)
search.lycos.com (22.5%)
search.yahoo.com (20%)
www.altavista.com (12.5%)
When choosing addresses to send itself to W32/MyDoom-O will avoid
addresses which contain any of the following strings:
mailer-d
spam
abuse
master
sample

W32/Agobot-KM
Aliases
Backdoor.Agobot.ty, W32/Gaobot.worm.gen.f virus
Type
Win32 worm
Detection
At the time of writing, Sophos has received just one report of this worm
from the wild.
Description
W32/Agobot-KM is a network worm that spreads to other computers by
exploiting network services with either weak passwords or unpatched
vulnerabilities.
In order to run automatically when Windows starts up W32/Agobot-KM
copies itself to the file MSVSRV32.EXE in the Windows system folder and
adds the following registry entries:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\msvsrv32
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\msvsrv32
W32/Agobot-KM runs continuously in the background, allowing a remote
intruder to access and control the computer via IRC channels.
W32/Agobot-KM modifies the Windows HOSTS file to redirect several AV and
security-related websites to 127.0.0.1

Troj/PatchLs-A
Aliases
Trojan.Win32.PatchLs.a, Win32/PatchLs.A
Type
Trojan
Detection
At the time of writing, Sophos has received just one report of this
Trojan from the wild.
Description
Troj/PatchLs-A is a Trojan which attempts to create an exploitable
vulnerability within the active LSASS.EXE/LSASRV.DLL process. It does
this by patching the LSASS process in memory (the files on the hard disk
are not affected). This process is known as "injection".
The injected code does not appear to perform any malicious function by
itself, but may possibly expose a vulnerability by orchestrating a
sequence of requests to the LSASS service manager (similar to how the
W32/Sasser-A worm worked)
Although the injection Trojan terminates, the injected code remains
active within the LSASS process until that process is restarted - for
instance by terminating the process or restarting the computer.
The injected instructions sit idle until invoked by a specific sequence
of LSASS requests. They do not by themselves perform a malicious
function, but could be used to force a buffer overflow or similar
exploitable condition.
Troj/CmjSpy-Z
Type
Trojan

a service named HPprinter, adding registry entries in the following
locations:
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\HPprinter
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HPprinter
The Trojan may also add the following registry entry to run itself on
system startup:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\HPprinter
Troj/CmjSpy-Z creates the following files in the Windows System folder:
hlicense.vxd
madll2sy.dll
sssdda334342.vxd
