Dennis: In my experience, networking problems like this can be hard to diagnose
(or work out)... I'm assuming from what you're saying that the hardware and
TCPIP settings are all correct.

If you're having a hard time connecting to the XP system from the W9x computer
a couple of things to check are:
-- on the W9x computer, you need to be set (in the Network control panel) for
Primary Network Logon: Client for Microsoft Networking
-- also on on the W9x computer, you need to logon with a user name and password
that are valid on the XP system... they can be the same as the user that is
currently logged onto the XP system.

TCP/IP networking can be intermittently flaky... you may want to install
NetBeui as an additional networking protocol on both systems... that's easy to
do on the W9x box, but may be more difficult on the XP system. (In fact, I
forget the details of how to do it on XP-- it may only be available as an
option on XP Pro, not XP Home... ) I've found adding NetBeui seems to make
networking a lot more stable many times.
