=========================
Greetings Ed!

EV>> My first Email experience was with Juno when it was Dial-Up.

RW>> Been there, done that. Hated every second of it.

EV>> I connect to it via the internet now but I only check the In-Box and
EV>> Junk-Box about twice a month JIC that old Address is still in
EV>> someones Address Book and they send me a message.

RW>> Is Juno even around after all this time?

EV> Sure tis, I still use the Free Juno account.

Interesting.

 EV> -snip-

RW>> The only way to make a truely safe backup is to save it on a HD
RW>> or USB flash drive. A USB flash drive can lose files to if you
RW>> don't use the USB 'release' feature in windoz...

EV> Does "'release' feature" mean clicking on the "Safely Remove
EV> Hardware" icon on the XP Taskbar, then clicking the drive letter to
EV> tell the box not to use that one anymore? -snip-

Yeup.

EV>> A friend of mine told me She has a Grand-Daughter (GD) who took lots
EV>> of photos of Her (GD's) Mother (our friends Daughter) on a cellphone
 EV>> from a Rental Company.
EV>> One day the GD decided to return it to the Company without anyone
EV>> thinking about having someone take the photos off of it.
EV>> The Girls Mom passed away and all the pictures are gone now.

RW>> Seen that before. Now the daughter is passed and those photos
RW>> will probably be lost to all of the Gkids.

EV>> My friend sure wishes her GD had done as You have by keeping those
 EV>> photos on a thumbdrive.
EV>> But most cellphone users are not Technical type folks as We Are
 EV>> Here.

RW>> Well, those photos will probably be replaced by new photos as
RW>> time goes by. I was looking for a couple of photos on my cell
RW>> yesterday and they're no longer there...

EV> No, they can't be replaced, Our friends daughter passed away,
EV> no one can take any photos now of her, and the Rental Phone was
EV> returned to the store long time ago.

Too bad.

EV> I don't have a cell phone, but am wondering if they have a MicroSD
EV> Card Slot where someone Could make a backup from what is on the phone
EV> at the time the backup is made. It'd be nice if one could do that.

Yes and no. One has to put an SD card in the phone and it is a special
'micro' sized SD card. My Nokia has one in it, but I've forgotten the size
of it. (pulled the SD card out) - yes, it's an 8Gb mini-SD...

EV>> All of the photos I take with my Digital Camera are Saved to this
EV>> HDD. I keep multiple Full Back-Ups JIC I ever needed to Restore what
EV>> is on this XP box, If the latest one would fail, I hope the Child
 EV>> Back-up works.

RW>> The photos I seem to have lost were of the fixture I made to
RW>> 'push' my verticle mill from the front of the garage to the
RW>> back with my pickup. It attached to the receiver hitch on the
RW>> truck and it had wheels to keep it from stopping the momentum
RW>> as I pushed. That worked fine and I was explaining it to a GM
RW>> area manager, but couldn't produce the photos to show him. Oh
RW>> well, he was intrigued at the genious of it all.

EV> Are You talking about a "Milling Machine"?

Yes. I have a Bridgeport CNC milling machine in my garage/work shop.

EV> Your thoughts about the lost photos made me think of a Ham I met that
EV> was Licensed as a Novice, 1/2 a year after I got my Novice Ticket.
EV> When He built a project for his station, he would put a Schematic of
EV> it inside the box before he fastened the cover on it.

Good idea. I do that with aftermarket parts for my cars too. I have a 1956
Chevy and I keep a folder of everything that I've added to the car that
wasn't available in 1956. i.e. it has AC, power disc brakes, rack and
pinion steering, overdrive automatic trans, solid state radio w/CD player
and ports for USBs, and it looks like the original tube radio, etc..

EV> I knew of that, and one day at another Hams home, I was asked if I
EV> knew anything about a circuit that my other friend had built for this
EV> man. I told him to open the box and see if there was anything inside
EV> the box that would be of help, after opening the box, there it was.

I did that with my Motorola repeater that still sits on top of Mt Palomar
too. Wish I hadn't sold it now.

EV>> Recently, I got one of those 3TB External HDD and one thing I don't
EV>> like about it is it saves the back-ups I put on it,
 EV>> in one B-I-G Chunk.

 RW>> Yeah...

EV>> My usual plan is to just Copy the sub-directory the new back-up is
EV>> in to Another External HDD so I have a Duplicate. (As Tom says:
 EV>> "Belt And Suspenders")

RW>> So, you didn't make a sub-folder before you copied everything
 RW>> to the HDD.

EV> Oh Sure!, Sub-Directories are my friend!
EV> I first make a BACKUP Directory, and then make Sub-Directories from
EV> it to save my Child and GrandChild ... backups to the BACKUP
 EV> Directory.

8^)

EV>> I will have to go back to making my BU's to the drive that I used B4
EV>> getting the 3TB'er so I can Copy from it to the new drive. :-(

EV>> It'll take the same time to do a BU (and DUPE), but me seeing the
EV>> whole BU in one piece really surprized me when I first saw it on
 EV>> that drive.

RW>> 8^) That's what big drives are for.

EV> I didn't want to try Copying that backup file on the NTFS drive to
EV> one of my Ext. FAT-32 drives. I am not sure if the copying process
EV> would break the BIG file into 4GB Chunks that would fit on the older
EV> drives I use to keep my backup on.

Those older drives can be converted to NTFS, if you want to.

EV> I didn't want to waste the time trying that and find out it Failed.

Good idea.

EV>> I didn't notice the new drive was NTFS, vs. FAT-32.

 RW>> That's a good thing.

EV> Probably, if I used a 64-bit OS, but everything here has 32-bit,
EV> 16-bit and 8-bit OS's. The new Ext. Drive being NTFS was unexpected,
EV> as it wasn't mentioned in the description on the case.

That's ok. It will work with any Windoz version newer than W98. I began to
use NTFS when I installed W2k...

EV> Yes!, "I Can Read" Some Letters And Numbers, I know enough to make me
EV> considered dangerous 'about some things'.

LOL!

EV>> I just looked at the box the drive came in and it doesn't say what
EV>> Format was on it, it only says it can be used with Windows7 as is,
EV>> and MacIntosh users will have to ReFormat it.

RW>> I began to use NTFS when I first started using W2k...it will do
RW>> backups to a safe place all on its own.

EV> This XP box was the first one I've owned that wasn't FAT.

Well there's FAT (8 and 16 bit) and then there's FAT32, which was a W98
thing.

EV>> My XP box has USB 2.0 ports, the 3TB drive is my first USB 3.0
 EV>> device. -snip-

RW>> Wish I had v2 ports, let alone v3. Still stuck on v1 USBs.

EV> Long time ago, I had an W98SE box I put a USB 2.0 card in, those
EV> cards ought to be real cheap now. Do you Have a spare slot to put one
 EV> in?

Probably. It's almost time to buy a new MB anyway. So, I'll wait for a
while longer.

    Have a day!
