=================================
Ed,

EV>That set up works O.K. when the computer has a connection to a Router
EV>on DSL or Broadband, or close to a Free Wi-Fi outlet.

EV>No Router or free Wi-Fi nearby, no Ham Radio Operating ._._._ <PERIOD>

I normally am hooked up with Comcast High Speed Internet...but have a
Verizon Mi-Fi card for emergency or portable use.

EV>Which were You connected with? a Cat cable or Wi-Fi?

Comcast. For several months, I got numerous letters from AT&T, saying
DSL was available in my area. Well, there's a shopping center just a
mile from where I live, with an AT&T store in it. Each time I took that
letter in, and showed it...but was told "we don't have DSL service
there". I finally signed up with Comcast, and told the folks at AT&T
(who I had told numerous times that "someone is dropping the ball"),
that "it's your loss...you didn't deliver...Comcast did". Ironically,
Comcast has a Customer Service Center less than a mile from my
apartment.

EV>I don't use Wi-Fi, and aparentently the folks around my area who do
EV>have Wi-Fi have it locked down for their own use, I know two families
EV>on the next street have theirs locked down, because both of them have
EV>someone living there that knows how to set their pc's up to keep other
EV>people out.

You really need to encrypt that, or someone will hack into your
connection (been there, done that). I have an older Linksys WRT54G
router (which I think is the main one used for the Ham Radio HSMM Mesh
Networks), but an Xfinity cable modem that I pay on my monthly Comcast
bill. This way, if the cable modem dies, I get a new one for free.
However, I have to run the deal in "bridge" mode, as none of the VoIP
or BBS applications would work otherwise.

Plus, while I had considered a tablet, which required Wi-Fi, I have my
main desktop (for the BBS, surfing, games, etc.), and the 2 laptops (for
the 2 separate Magic Jack (tm) lines (one for voice mail, one for fax))
all on a LAN...which go to a WD Network drive for nightly backups, with
Acronis Software.

However, with all the unsettled weather and thunderstorms we've had
lately, very little computer, BBS, data backup, etc. has been done.

EV>IIRC hadn't I read that You also did a Ham Radio Demostration at a Park
EV>one time?
EV>You sure had to be piggy backing on someone elses internet connection
EV>for that Demo.

Actually, no piggybacking at all. I had my Verizon Wi-Fi card, that I
used for it. My Mom has one as well, and sometimes I'll use both of
them...charging one, while using the other one. But, it's rare I do a
demo...especially outside...anymore. This time of year, the stinging
insects (wasps, hornets, bees, yellow jackets, etc.) are in abundance,
and I am allergic to them.

I discovered a nest getting started yesterday evneing, and had to call
maintenance to come apply wasp spray, and take down the nest (which
they did this morning). Both the maintenance guys are 2 nice black
individuals, and neither of them like the stinging insects, either.
Plus, it's RARE I have any maintenance issues in my apartment.

I *PREFER* the cold weather...because while it makes the arthritis
hurt more, the cold weather means little if any severe weather threat,
no heat illness, and no insects...stinging or otherwise.

EV>I have read about a City somewhere here in the U.S.A. that was planning
EV>on having Metro Wi-Fi, but don't know if they ever accomplished it.

I remember all the stink on BPL (broadband over power line) with the
effects on ham radio...and some cities are likely doing a Metro Wi-Fi,
but I don't know of any ofhand.

EV>It's wonderful when it works the way You envisioned it to do, isn't it?

Yeah, but it rarely does it the first time. :P
