Computers were not so common in the early days, but certainly the early
receivers and transmitters were used by hams.

Yes, some still adore the old AM equipment, and the audio quality is
superb, though maybe not so effective through QRM and weak signals.

Yes, and the Epson PC/AX2 that I bought in aug.1988 came with a 20Mb HD,
ATI EGA display card, 15" color monitor, WordStar and XTree programmes.
Shortly after the purchase of that package, I added another 20 Mb HD.

I too started with a S-38 (I think it was), but its selectivity was wide
as a barn door, so I quickly built a ham-band only double superhet, that
followed me through many years.

Well, I got my license in 1951, and that was the year I also built my
first 6F6-807 TX.

While we were there (here), we learnt to know OH0NB, the only ham on the
Aland islands. Through him I was offered two different jobs and also
learned that the housing situation was "pick and choose" what you want.

It was actually the housing situation that was the deciding factor,
because we had already stood in the housing queue 6 years in Helsingfors
without result.

No, today it would be called an exciter, since the final was a 2E26.

In 1956 I built the final with the 4-65A as top chassis in a 4' high,
19" rack that also was to house a 2x807 AM modulator. That modulator
was never finished, because SSB was so much more effective.

I have also built many kits, mainly for my service shop, my ham station,
and for others that didn't think they were capable of doing it.
