Howdy! Holger, GE,

HG> In a message on Wednesday 12-20-15 Ed Vance said to Holger Granholm:

 HG> GM Ed,

HG> even though I see that your mail was posted right after midnight.

Yes, I saved it then and thought to Edit it some more before I posted it
in the morning, but forgot to and just sent it on its way.
What You See Is What You Get. TM

HG> Oh yes I know that you older americans don't know the decimal system.

EV> Decimals are O.K., Metrics are So So, I can use them when needed,

HG> Because metric is a word that in my mind is so closely related to the
HG> length in meters, kilometers and so on, I hesitate to use it to differ
HG> between the old Imperial measurements, but I do it anyway.

Some product specifications don't have both U.S. and Metric Units listed.
I appreciate it when both values are given.

The first Metric Value I learned was in the instruction sheet for how to use
Kodak Chemicals to develop 35MM Film.
Kodak always printed 68F/20C was the recommended temperature the Developer,
Stop Bath and Fixer chemicals should be at.

20C was a even number and it was easy for me to remember that was the same as
68F when I a young teenager, iirc 14 Years Old then.
Other literature that only shows a Metric Unit, I would have to consult a
Chart or Formula if I was wanting to know the value.

In the early 1960's I bought a Circular Slide Rule and a Weights And Measures
Conversion Table from a store in Hong Kong, then A British Crown Colony.
They were manufactured by Takeda Drawing Instruments Mfg. Company who iirc
is in Japan.
Takeda called those two products by the "Concise" brand name.

Their Weights And Measures Conversion Table had Equivalents of Imperial,
Metric and Japanese weights and measures.

I have forgotten that the U.S. Units are called Imperial and have thought
the Japanese Units were the ones called Imperial, My Mistake, Sorry.

I never saw the movie called The Ugly American, but it looks like I'm one of
them.

EV> .... Right now I inserted the Plugs I usually have in the UPS in a
EV> A.C. Power Strip so I could use this pc. Works For Me!

HG> Ok, it works for you, but it really isn't necessary to "pre-charge"
HG> the battery. Usually there is enough charge in it when you buy it,,

EV> Of course, You know I turn my UPS Off when I'm done using the
EV> computers, I just figure it being plugged in the A.C. Wall Outlet
EV> keeps the battery charged up.

HG> My UPS is constantly on, supplying power and protection to my computer,
HG> but the monitor isn't connected to the UPS. This conserves the
HG> available power capacity needed in a long power outage.

I still wonder if the Tripp-Lite UPS charges the battery when I have it turned
OFF, but without a Schematic I wouldn't know for sure.
A long time ago I bought a 12 Volt15 Amp Power Supply and wrote Tripp-Lite
asking if I could get a Schematic for it to put with my other Amatuer Radio
papers and they sent one to me.
I'll send an Email to them to see if I can get one for my UPS so I can find
out if what I think is correct, or not, about the battery being charged while
it is plugged in a A. C. wall socket.

HG> If the UPS starts telling me that it is about to be exhausted, I have a
HG> handwritten note above the monitor, showing the keystrokes needed to
HG> get an orderly close down of the machine.

The monitor I have is LCD so it gets power from the UPS so I can see what's
happening.
I tried using Tripp-Lite Power Alert USB software but it had problems with
this XP box so I stopped using it.
If the UPS starts Beeping I come running if I'm out of the room.

HG> That isn't really necessary, since the machine starts up in an ordely
HG> way, with only an extra CHKDSK before it awakens, after a close-down.

OS/2 figured out a Better Way than MS has, I'd say.

HG> The spike preventing circuit also works constantly even with an empty
 HG> battery.

EV> Yep, the Nuvistors do that job.

HG> Please don't use words/names that you don't know the meaning of.

HG> The nuvistors are/were low-power triodes, used in UHF amplifiers
HG> (6CW4), and UHF oscillators (6DV4) up to 1000 MHz.

All I can say is DUH!, as I wrote above I intended to Edit that message before
sending it on the next morning but I forgot to look to see if I used the
correct "ISTORS" word.

MOV - Metal Oxide Varistor is the ISTOR I should had typed.
What can I say but DUH!

 HG> MRI XMAS,

I did have a good one, hope Yours was good also.

... Syntax? Why not? Everything else is taxed.
