Howdy! Holger,

 HG> GA Ed,

EV> My Messages tell on Me, I can't keep the Date and Time a secret
EV> UNLESS I change the Date and Time on this Computer.

HG> The date/time is stamped on the message when it is uploaded to your
 HG> Host

I didn't know that, I thought whatever time I last edited a message stayed
with the .REP packet I send to my BBS.

EV> Some times I stay up late, other times I will get up before the
EV> Roosters Crow to use my computers.

HG> Usually I reply to messages in the morning, but today was a busy one,
HG> so I had to leave this and some others until the afternoon, in this
 HG> case, or evening.

I'm just undependable.

HG> What Win10 Telemetry situation?? Never heard of such a thing.

 EV> I learned of it at www.askwoody.com .

HG> Problem for you is that you read too much.

EV> I'm still TRYING to be a Mister Know-It-All, but ain't done it
 EV> yet......

HG> NO, very far from it. Stop reading all sorts of gossip.

I think the sites I read have Technical information, not gossip.

EV> I wonder if anyone else reading this has read about Microsoft having
EV> Telemetry sent to their location from people using a computer with
EV> the Windows 10 Operating System on it?

HG> There exists a setting where you can disable anything the machine would
HG> like to send to M$, or anything M$ would like to know. Use it!

I've read a comment that doing that would prevent Edge from giving any
Results from a Search that was done using it.

EV> Some Articles on www.askwoody.com have Links to articles at other
EV> web sites Bleeping Computers - Wired.com and Others about the Care
 EV> and Feeding of WinTEN.

HG> Nothing beats what you yourself choose in the settings.

Do You like using Cortana?

HG> There are also settings in ZoneAlarm to inform you if the machine wants
HG> to send out something somewhere, or if some(body) wants to connect to
 HG> your machine.

HG> ZoneAlarm is a much better Firewall (free), and the Pro version also
HG> contains an antivirus program but is not free.

HG> I use AVG (free) and ZoneAlarm (free) to protect the Windows machines.

Currently I am using FortKnox Firewall (free) and Avast! (free).

EV> I use to "think (TM)" I may want to start using Windows 7, but not
 EV> now.

HG> I have skipped all versions of Windows between XP and Win10.

EV> In Win3.1 if a program started getting messed up I could look at the
EV> .INI file and try to see what may be causeing problems.

HG> AFAIR the .INI file didn't show what caused problems. OTOH I don't
HG> recall any specific problems with 3.1 or WFWG 3.11.

I saved the older copies of WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI by using SaveAs and
changing the INI Extension to numerals, as in WIN.001 for the first time
I saved it and incrementing the number each time I saved another copy of
the WIN. file.

When I was curious to see if there were any changes I would use the Command
FC WIN.INI WIN.001 | MORE
to show me what changes, if any had been made.

I used the numbered Extensions with the SYSTEM.INI file too. Worked for Me.

EV> If ever I wanted to Restore this pc to that first Backup,

EV> I'd use True Image 10.0 to make one more Full Backup so after I
EV> rolled back this computer, I would be able to put My DATA Files back
 EV> on the new setup.

HG> You should absolutely make an image or clone when the machine works as
 HG> it should.

This computer works but I don't think it works as it should.
At least I still can Send .REP packets and Read .QWK packets and do Email.

EV> (or use the two HP Restore DVD I made the day I first turned it On),

HG> Well, if you use that, you'll have to re-install all programs you have
HG> added to the machine since you made that Restore DVD.

Yep, that's why I said above I would make one more Full Backup before doing
that.

EV> In the years following I have read that a person ought to make a
EV> Full Backup or a Clone HDD as the FIRST THING they do on a new
EV> computer before they connect it to the internet.

 HG> That's exactly what I did to both Win10 machines, a laptop and a
HG> stationary machine, but they don't contain anything that I have
 HG> installed afterwards.

HG> That's where an image or clone come in.

I didn't know to do that back in 1994 when I got the 486DX33 built or back
in 2006 when I bought this XP computer.

Before that time when all I had was a Commodore 64 PC I made copies of
the programs I used and filed the original Floppy Disk away and used
my back up copy to run the program.
I figured if something got written on the Program Disk that changed how
it worked I still had the Original stored away.

EV> I tried doing an Incremental Backup but decided if I am going to
EV> back a computer up, I ought to let it save everything that is on the
EV> pc when I make the Backup.

HG> AFAIK, an incremental backup does only change/update the previous
 HG> backup

Yes, it only writes changes it finds on the computer since a backup or
the last incremental backup was made.

Yes, a Incremental backup takes a shorter time to do, but if ever I would
have to do a Recovery I would have to Recover the First backup and EACH ONE
of those Incremental backups I had made to get the computer Restored.
That sounds to me like too much trouble, so I decided if I want a Backup
I will make a Full Backup, then if I had to Restore this computer I would
not have to jump through many, many hoops during the Restore session.

But that's Me.
the

EV> I have tried looking for where XP saves that "personal settings" so
EV> I could delete it and let the computer recreate a new one.

 HG> DON't DO IT.

If I were able to find that setting, before I'd do any changes to it,
I would make a Full backup to fall back on, if needed.

It is 23:20 when I saved this message.
