I got your message in a packet I grabbed on 26Sept2013.

Now I'm trying MMWIN49 for awhile to see if I'd rather use it

I believe I got MMAIL.RC set up better than I wrote about earlier
this year.

Yes, MM49 allows me to use the mouse.
I was having some trouble when I used ALT-TAB to switch back and forth
from MMDOS49 and another window I kept open so I could see what
file name(s) I was using in the directory I save messges in for
different echos.
When I did that and I returned to MMDOS49, the mouse cursor didn't
move when I moved the mouse.
During that time I did have the window for both MM49 and the
other directory MAXIMIZED.
I don't have them Maximized anymore and can click on either one on the
Taskbar to go back and forth from one to the other (or even do something
else) and when I return back to MM49 (DOS or WIN) the mouse can move
the cursor.  WHEW!

I'm sorry to hear that.
I hate losing any of my files too.

I used the C=64 last month for a while, the disks I selected all
worked except for a couple of 5.25" disks that I had already marked
on the label that that side didn't work anymore.
I guess I'm just lucky.

By now I'm sure you have read that I got a SyQuest drive and got
the files that was on those cartridges I had so long ago put on
this XP box where I can use them now.   Another WHEW!

I saw other messages from You to Me but I will end this reply
and send the .REP packet up tonight before I go to bed.
I'll continue reading the messages in this packet later. .... ..
