Let's try and remember the pace of change a couple of decades ago... in 1988, I
bought a 'turbo-XT clone'... and 8088 CPU (actually an NEC clone processor)
running at 10 MHz. It came with 512 kb of memory, a pair of 360 kb floppy disk
drives (no hard drive) and a (clone) monochrome Hercules graphics card. MS DOS
3.2.

I upgraded the memory to 640 kb and added a 40 MB hard drive (the hard drive
cost $400 - a good deal at the time).

Then I swapped the motherboard for a 12 MHz 286 model, added an expanded memory
card (for an additional 2 MB RAM). I was running Windows 2.1 - with
applications including AmiPro word processor, MS Excel, Aldus Pagemaker, and
CorelDraw.

In 1990, I swapped that motherboard for a 386-25 model and added a second 40 MB
hard drive. (Note that at the time, RAM cost $150/megabyte). Windows 3.0 was
released but required new versions of all my Windows applications. It also
required 12 MB of drive space, six times as much as Windows 2.x.

Over the next few years, I moved to a more efficient 386-DX33 motherboard, and
then to a 486-DX66. I replaced the pair of 40 MB hard drives with a huge and
heavy 1 GB SCSI drive... that saw me through to the release of Windows 95.

Next step was a Pentium 166... by now we're around 1998. So for me, I'd gone
through 5 generations of PC technology in 10 years - an average of a processor
generation every two years.

Along the way I made two changes - moving to laptops and working with Macs as
well as Windows; a publisher I was writing for loaned me a 486-66 laptop around
1995 or so, and I purchased a Mac-clone - a 160 MHz Motorola StarMax in 1998.

Personally, I'm glad the pace of change has slowed down some!
