Ärende: Re: liquid sunshine
===========================
In a message dated 02-09-14, Paul Quinn said to Holger Granholm:

Hello my friend,

PQ>We're getting the same 'melting' here as well. It's been drizzling
PQ>(light rain) for over 24hrs and is uncomfortable. Not enough to
PQ>look for umbrellas or raincoats, and just enough to get a brief
PQ>soaking if a person stands in one place for a few minutes. It's
PQ>referred to as liquid sunshine here. Hence the melting notion. :)

Liquid sunshine! That's the best expression I've read lately. ROTFL

HG> OK, if you can say XP is pretty. In my mind it's overworked but
HG> maybe the best of late Windows versions.

PQ>Well, it runs fairly solidly here. But I don't trust it for most of
PQ>my Fidonet stuff.

Neither do I. As you can see in a separate mail this is what happens
with Windows.

PQ>I do use an XP vBox to do a couple of nodelist-related jobs.

PQ>All of my other Fidonet stuff will not run in XP, as I rely on a
PQ>few DOS utilities that just don't run in XP.

The fine thing with OS/2 is that DOS applications run without any
hiccups in OS/2.

PQ>We seem to have a seasonal/environmental glitch here. We have
PQ>problems with signal breakup of some sort. It seems to happen for a
PQ>few days leading up to & around the equinoxes.

I had a similar problem but only the lower frequency channels were hit
by the problem. It was again a simple fix once I recalled that a bad
connection first hit the low frequncies while poor signal level did hit
the high frequencies first.

The problem was a bad connection in the coax cable plug that connects
the cable to the set.

PQ>It's so bad at
PQ>present that we rely on 'closed captions' for programme dialogue for
PQ>some channels, at times. It's either seasonal or could just be that
PQ>we're in the vicinity of a couple of heavy engineering plants

If the signal comes from a satellite it could just be that the suns
rays hit the parabolic antenna from the same direction as the satellite
signal either at your home or at the cable companys receiving site.

PQ>(diesel long-haul & suburban electric train manufacuring, and light
PQ>machine shops supporting the industry), plus an electric
PQ>sub-station, and, we're subject to electromagnetic interference.
PQ>We're not sure.[shrug] However it's a short duration thing, and is
PQ>annoying at its worst for a few days in the year.

Arcing at electric switches or relays causing spikes in the power
distribution lines could also create havoc.

Have a dry day,

Holger
