Paul,

The first Lock was 600 feet long by 110 feet wide.
The second Lock was 1200 feet long by 110 feet wide.

I locked through Pleasure Crafts and Barges pushed by a Towboat.
The majority of the Barges were 195 feet long by 35 feet wide,
at the 1200' lock we could lock 15 barges and the boat, but at the
600' lock it took two lockings to get them through.
The Captain had to push the first section of 9 barges in the lock,
uncouple the wire lines that had connected those barges to the tow,
and then the Captain would back out so the Lock Gates could be shut.
After the 9 barges were out then we could fill (or drain) the lockpit
to get the second half through the lock.

I was told about Lift Locks by someone in Canada where the part of the
lock that the Vessel(s) were in was lifted (or lowered), it was sorta
a Metal Box that was moved up or down while the vessel stayed in it
until the operation was completed.

Where I worked, the water level inside the concrete lock walls went
up or down to get traffic through.

You said "on the ground", so I take that to mean that you have been
on a moutain top and experienced what snow is all about, correct?

I was on vacation in June and drove through a mountainous area where
there was show on each side of the road, I was in the State of Montana.
