Funny you should mention this, as I had this conversation (FIDONEWS) with
a self-appointed Belgian aircraft 'expert' - just last week.

The Merlin type engine was designed and first built in 1934 (you may have
heard of the Perigrine), so Rolls-Royce had a head start and that was from
scratch, not an existing 'improved' design passed down by the originators
to Packard in c1940...

Did you know that the P51 Mustang was a varient of the British Spitfire,
including the rear shielded canopy? Dubbed the NA-73 in 1940, it was built
from British specifications by NAA and originally fitted with the Allison
v-1710 engine, almost a direct copy of the early Merlins. The NA-73 served
in the latter part of the Battle of Britain, c1941 and went on to
become the P51...

TW> The ones put in the Spitfire were the Roll- Royces Clone engines and
TW> not the improved higher horsepower engine developed by Packard for
 TW> the P-51

The Merlin was put in the Spitfire all through the war, but they were
somewhat inferior by design. Packard and British engineers worked on
improving the engine, which is why there are at least 15 variants of it
ranging from 740hp in 1934 to over 1700hp by the end of the war. It was
improved with new carburation and eventually fuel injection, super charger
improvements, vastely improved head designs, etc..

TW> Henry Ford won the origional bidding for the engines but backed out
TW> of the $130,000,000 contract after finding out some would be shipped
 TW> to England.

By 1940, Ford was already building Merlins at his Manchester plant and
building a new plant in Trafford Park, England. Ford was manufacturing RR
engines anyway. No need to get into the engine building business here when
he was already making a fortune doing what he did best.

BTW, the percentage of rejections by the Air Ministry was zero out of the
30,400 produced in Ford's England plants.

And this was after Ford engineers told RR that their engine building
tolerances were too loose, which made RR take time out to redesign their
engines to Ford's specifications.

TW> In the second proposition Packard Motor Car Company won the Contract

"Packard was reluctantly awarded the contract by the British Purchasing
Commission."

PS- the Mustang wasn't the performer it became to be until it was fitted
with the Merlin engine in the D version of the aircraft, c1943-44. With
the Allison engine, it couldn't perform at high altitudes until the model
was redesigned to have the open canopy and Merlin engine.

"It is the fault of our science that it wants to explain all, and
if it explain not, then it says there is nothing to explain."
     Bram Stoker (1847-1912)

Thus, we have "Climate Change Science" - which isn't capable of
 explaining anything.
