 I was tired after finishing the burn, and gave it up at the time.
 Today, I did some checking and discovered that the folder and file(s)
 in question are not part of XP Home per se, but rather SP2.

 That exonerates the original XP Home OEM disk, and raises questions
 about the disk created by AutoStreaming SP 2 into XP Home OEM.
                                                    
 Since I did duplicate the result with two separately created disks,
 the SP2 executable or its implementation with AutoStreamer should be
 implicated.  However, it's the same executable used without issue to
 create the XP Pro disk, so we're back to square one.

 At least Linux was able to provide a solution, if not an explanation.

 BTW, I have discovered another oddity along the way.  I have not
 previously attempted to use my Acomdata USB/Firewire external hard
 drive as a locally shared drive; I have simply plugged it into 
 each of my systems directly with the appropriate cable.

 While the drive can be set up to be shared over the Windows network
 from a Windows system, remote access to the shared folders is denied,
 even with the proper permissions and settings.  If however, I share
 it from the Xandros system as a locally shared drive on the Windows
 network, access to the shared folders is granted.  <shaking head>

 One last piece of information regarding PE Builder and UBCD4WIN.
 It will fail during the .iso file generation if the Windows source
 files are accessed from the network at 100Mbps (buffer underruns,
 I suspect).  Firewire/USB 2.0 speed is adequate.  That should
 rule out any network creation except gigabit ethernet.
