Depends on the age of the drive, I suspect.  More current ones use only +5VDC
while older ones may also use +12VDC.  Older drives also tend to use more
current, especially on startup, than the 500mA supported by USB.  A drive I
picked at random uses 4.5 watts of +5v or nearly 1 amp of current to start up.
You could look up the model number of the drive on the manufacturer's web
site to determine what it specifically needs.

That's what you get for using such a low resolution camera.  ;)  I've got many
DVDs filled with images and a bunch of scanned slides to add to the
collection.  A hard drive would be easier to store the images on but hard
drives are also notorious for dying, even new ones.  I simply will not trust
the storage of all these images to one device - multiples are required.  As
such, I have backups of all my images so that if one can't be read in one
spot, another can.  You may still want to write images to CD or other
removeable media so you don't just lose the drive and your digital life.

I just hope you find my musing entertaining.  I try not to just give dry
details but to make them useful.  My family will tell you that I'm prone to
far too much info but I'm trying to give details to educate rather than to
just answer a question.  Most folks' eyes start glazing over after I get
rolling...  ;)

BTW, in my search for some info for this reply, I discovered that Seagate
provides data recovery for all makes/models of hard drives.  If anyone needs
to recover data, such as your friend you were speaking of a month or so ago,
that may be an easy place to start.  Details can be found on the web site.
