        I ahd some work cut out for me and did it. Tis locked file was
  after I got sucked in and installed the new AOL anti-virus cum
  firewall. It did not like the ZA nor McAfee presence on my system.
  somehow, it slowed it down to a Commodore 64 speed. I could not
  Remove/Add it from Control Panel. It said that one file was in use
  by another user ( who ? ) and could not be deleted. So I went into
  the Registry and deleted ALL AOL stuff. I had to reinstal it but the
  bug was gone.

 JG> I agree with Chuck - forget DOS.  However, to see hidden files in a
 JG> DIR command, use "dir /ah" (for Attribute Hidden).  You don't need to
 JG> see them to, say, edit or delete them but obviously other attributes

        I was in a hurry and did not refer to my DOS for Dummy yellow
  manual. But there must have been nigh on 200 entries for AOL stuff.
  My DOS manual is in agreement with your information.

        This has been done from day-1, I could see them all in XP but
  it had been locked in somehow.  Now it is gone and I got my Athlon
  back up to proper speed... 1.2 minute to boot.

        This last time, a while back, I chose FAT 32 for this system.
  Just to try. I have not seen any variance in use since then safe for
  the ability to use an ERD in DOS. If I go back to NTFS, I will
  investigate BARTPE a triffle more.

        After all, who is the master here, me or XP.  OK, not smart
        remark.  ;-))
