Ärende: XP does it again

Hello Ross -

I am replying to your reply to Tom not because you are alone in
your opinions but because I have tried to plead for a more open
and honest discourse on this same topic (networking home PCs)
before.

My post applies to all of the people who insist home networking
is a 'done deal' that anyone can do given enough time and
patience.

I have tried to network my brother's XP with his W98SE and was
not able to suceed. Tom is not alone in his 'failure' nor in
his annoyance at what _should_ be doable but for some reason
does not work.

TW>>>> calls for more then Patience.

RC>>> Dont do the wizards.

Some have said the opposite, that the wizard is 'the thing'.

TW>> I found that out the HARD WAY. And I see from some quick
TW>> Web Searches that it is HIGHLY recomended unless you have
TW>> a total XP Computer lan.

RC> 1. Make sure File And Printer Sharing is installed

RC> 2. All systems you want networked belong to the same
RC> workgroup.

RC> Adjust your firewall accordingly.

RC> What you want to do can be done, is being done and is not
RC> very hard, you need patience and I mean no offense.

When I mentioned my own inability to network two machines quite
a few others here on FIDO admitted to having had troubles and
some admitted that their networking only worked part of the
time. They just stopped trying at some point along the way.

RC> Maybe you can explain why I have my linux box happily
RC> chattering both ways with my 2 winXP boxes and the other 2
RC> XP boxes and the ME box, why is it that I can print to the
RC> laser printer connected to the linux box from any of my XP
RC> boxes?

Possibly the problem is the W98SE machine? The XP to W98SE is
what I tried to do and could not do.

RC> I used no steenkin wizards at any point in setting up the
RC> network.

The XP wizard tells you it will create a floppy that will
automate the setup on the W98SE machine. If this is not the
truth you do not know that at first light. Other people tell
you that when you've exhausted all possible efforts and begin
to complain (admit) about your failure.

RC> Dont be spewing this anti-Bill Gates/M$ crap when the
RC> limitation in your situation is due to your inexperience
RC> and lack of patience. Now maybe you arent that
RC> inexperienced but a lack of patience can cloud/obscure any
RC> that you have.

I freely admit to having had no experience with networking any
Windows machine but I have an extreme amount of patience and
couldn't get this to work properly.

RC> I know this isnt the same exact thing, but have you ever
RC> attempted to replace a part on your car before, whereas
RC> there is one bolt that you cant get off because there isnt
RC> ample room for you to maneuver your hand with the wrench or
RC> you are using a improper tool, eventually frustration
RC> builds up and patience runs out, this is you with this
RC> networking thing.

I do admit to wondering if Microsoft had hidden a bolt
somewhere that I could not see and I was tugging on something
bolted down that would never budge.

TW>> it up to STUPIDITY on my part. Shound have knuckled down
TW>> years ago and learned LINUX.

RC> Whole new learning curve that requires lotsa patience. :)

Honestly Ross, you admitted to me some time back that you had
to ask for help to get your system setup and how thankful you
are to those who supplied that help. To claim success based on
"lotsa patience" is disingenuous and hurtful when it just isn't
the truth.
