As GNU/Linux scrambles for the desk tops of as many users as
possible the differences between Linux and Windows begins to
blur quite a bit. If the GUI layer gets any thicker the linux
users will get dumber and the multitasking will slow to a crawl.

Maybe. That would depend on what each person has been using
his/her computer to accomplish. Many people just use the
comptuer as a glorified typewriter ya know?

I would use OBERON as a better 'test' for patience. Try it and
see if you can maintain your patience until it can connect and
browse the internet for you and read/write POP3 emails. :-)

The popular notion is that anger=bad but I don't agree. Some
things won't change until people get angry. Vietnam was one
Iraq _will_ be another. Anger is better than depression because
anger motivates while depression is a dead end.

Two letters? The "hd" followed by a, b, c, etc. That's no show
stopper.

One of my Slackware installs is scripted to mount/umount the
floppy automatically. I suspect this could be accomplished for
other devices?

As it should in _all_ OS. It disgusts me that many don't.

Yes they do matter even when using Windows. Linux over-indulges
in this almost as a preocuppation from it's UNIX heritage as a
corporate networked OS.

This is true for Mac OSX, OBERON, and others. Nothing unusual
about that.

Again, depends what the machine is expected to accomplish.
Ubuntu, Linspire, Debian, and others claim 2000+ binaries ready
to install without the need to compile any of them.

Here's where I got into a nasty argument with Johnathan Cluts
(sig leader for OS9 on Compuserve). I was trying to learn OS9
at the time at his (and others) insistance that it was a 'good
thing to know'. They didn't bother to tell me I could ALIAS any
command to any word that I was comfortable with and as many as
I wanted. They also failed to mention PRINTERR. A utility that
would look up those error code numbers and display the meaning
in ENGLISH. When I did find out about these I was furious they
had left me to struggle when there were ways to make the
transition less difficult. 

LS can be alias'd to 'dir'.

Various flavors of Windows are not 'the same'. Watch me
struggle on WinME sometime. :-)

Not sure what you mean here but I do know there used to be
several 'flavors' of command line interpreter for linux but DOS
had 4DOS, CED, PCED, and others.

I disagree. Un-learning what I already know about various OS to
use linux is almost too difficult. I waste time typing commands
that won't work in linux (for instance).

I would say that if they use M$ OS and _like_ the way it works
they may not like linux (or any other *nix). OBERON has
similarities to Windows that might make the 'loss' of Windows
less painful but then OBERON is also closer to a CLI than a GUI
desktop (icons replaced by command syntax on screen).

Everyone has 'potential to learn', some have more than others.
