Spam filtering technology has gotten much better-- and many ISPs have
implimented it at their end... As a result, even with spam accounting for 70%
of all messages circulated, many users see hardly any of it in their inbox. You
may want to check whether that's the case for you-- I know my local cable
company has filtering available, but hasn't done a good job telling customers
about it-- individuals have to log into their webmail service and turn it on in
the webmail options.

As well, depending what you use as email client software at home, there may be
spam filtering that you can apply at your end-- in some cases free, in other
cases, relatively low-cost. Best results are from using both network and
individual spam filtering-- and checking the 'junk mailboxes' from time to time
for false positives.

 JE> Thanks

JE> How on earth do you, among a few others, manage to keep up with so
JE> terribly much in the personal computer realm? I appreciate your and the

 JE> I certainly cant/couldn't. :-(

Three main ways:

1) I subscribe to a number of email newsletters about technology news from
CNet, Ziff-Davis, among others... and scan their headlines-- though I don't
make any claims to read the vast bulk of their stories.

2) I keep an RSS-feed program running as a tray icon, which checks about 10
sources regularly, letting me know when there are new stories. Again, I only
actually read a few of them.

3) When there are individual questions (either my own or other people's) that I
want to follow up on, Google is invaluable.

I can't claim to be an expert on everything (or on anything, really)... but
there are a number of areas I try to stay on top of-- security: spyware, virus,
spam, etc is one of them. (Writing a weekly column for a local business
newspaper means I need to generate 51 stories a year-- giving me a modest
financial incentive to keep up with news that I can recycle). In this case,
your post occured within 24-48 hrs of my saving a link to the story I quoted--
which is about the window the opportunity for me to remember where I saw it.
