 Canadians have high adoption rates of cable-TV (90%+) which allows them to
receive US stations no matter where they live. Here in Vancouver, 'basic' cable
includes Seattle PBS but also Detroit PBS (for no reason I can understand--
pretty much the same programming 3 hours earlier) and an Atlanta network
affiliate.

 However, we are going to try to move back to our regularly-scheduled topic,
aren't we?

 Perhaps I'll start... I got my 21-year old son a very nice Creative Zen Vision
for Christmas/Hannukah... it's an MP3 player with a large, bright (640x480)
colour screen that also stores (30 GB hard drive) and displays photos and
video.

 It apparently installed properly, but when plugged into his PC, Windows was
unable to locate the drivers when it found the hardware. When I tested it on my
laptop, it worked fine. Creative's tech support wasn't helpful... so I assumed
there was something in his Windows setup that was conflicting with it; that's
why I was reinstalling WinXP on the new hard drive I'd purchased for that
system (he was also getting close to running out of drive space).

 After getting the new large hard drive recognized (which we've discussed in
another  thread) I installed XP and then SP2 and then (before installing
anything else), the Creative software... at that point, the Zen Vision worked
fine.

 As I continued installing other software, it stopped working. Ultimately, I
figured out the culprit-- that system has an ATI All-in-Wonder video card
installed, which includes a TV tuner-- letting Joey watch TV (see the
connection to the above topic) in a window while instant messaging his friends,
editing photos, etc.

 ATI's Multimedia Center seems to conflict with Creative's drivers... so I gave
Joey a choice-- he could have the Zen Vision usable or he could have TV on his
computer screen, but he couldn't have both on the same computer. He picked the
Zen Vision... at least for now.

 I emailed the 'solution' to Creative's tech support for their database...
maybe sometime ATI and Creative will manage to make their respective software
'play nice'... but I won't hold my breath!
